QUANTUM-X I got a couple of questions for you...

1) The figure in a lot of your images, the man wearing all black and usually with his back turned or obscuring a light... is that you?

2) I'm not sure where it is, or if it still exists, but there used to be a Christian theme park somewhere int he south and I think it's closed down, and most likely abandoned, have you ever shot there?

3) Do you get paid to shot or so you do it for the love of shooting?

4) Have you ever published a book, and/or do you plan on publishing one in the future?

4a) If you do publish, or have published, can you send me a signed copy?

Incredible work.

I don't understand why quantum-x still posts here and does "normal" work when he should be making big money for his photography.

If I could do what he does, I'd be... well, I don't know, but I am pretty sure that I wouldn't be hanging around GFY with talent like that.

Hello :D

1] I don't normally shoot people often, if I do, they're placed for perspective, or, as you pointed out, blocking light sources. Quite often the figure will indeed be me, or will be a friend that I happen to be exploring with.

2] I've not explored any theme parks in the US, but I'd be interested to know of any that you could recommend ;) The major theme park I've done is Gulliver's in Japan [now gone], and Pleasure Beach in the UK [still very active]

3] Always for the fun of it

4] I've not published anything.. I've chatted with some friends about releasing something, as we're beginning to amass enough content to make something that's decent, not pretentious. There's no timeline on this - every time I ever explore something new, it's normally better than previous times - so it's hard to determine the line of when to produce something.

4a] Sure, why not :D

Thanks for the compliments though. I feel kind of dazzled.

Stuart: Shooting is only part of what I do - they're just the memories and sketches of the places I've been to, and the things I've seen. Photography is also probably the only hobby that relaxes me, without pressure of deadlines, quotas, quality or production - and I'd hate to lose that - hence the reason why I only shoot for enjoyment.

I'm not so sure there's a massive market for urbex style photos - and there are def. people out there who shoot this niche better than I do.

Besides, I enjoy coding, and GFY is fun ;)

Well, I definitely think that your pictures should be your primary source of income and coding be the hobby.... not the other way around.

That's not to say that your coding isn't good (I've never seen it) but your photography is amazing. Better photographers in the world or not, I just can't see how you couldn't do very very well once magazines/publishers discovered you.

Thanks man.

One more... please...

Can you offer any advice, an shooting at night or with very little lighting?

I see that your night work is clean, clear and super sharp. I've tried l closing down to f/22 at 100, and gone for 30 second exposures (am I close?) I still seem to get undesired results. Maybe my white balance is off. Maybe I need a better perspective on the frame.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Normally you wouldn't want to stop down that far for a night exposure, you'll be there forever.

Depending on your light levels and desired DOF, you'll probably want to shoot from f4 - f8.
ISO 200 or lower is best for getting rid of noise, longer if you've got the time.

From there, just open up the shutter and sit back. If you're out of meter range on your camera, you can do trial and error, or boost the ISO, work out the correct exposure, then calculate how long it would need to be for your desired ISO.

Night shots are actually some of the easiest photos to take. Normally there's even light, contrast is low, and you can take time to single out elements..

True enough, but then at the same time, the rich'sters tell you to do what you love and the money will just come.
So....
