So my daughter finally asked the dreaded question...

'Mommy, do you believe in Santa Claus?'

ugh

I told her I believe in all things that are good. I then asked her if she believes and she said 'I don't know, let me think about it.' LOL she is 8.

Yep, this was the start of awareness...I am preparing for the big ones to hit soon enough.

oh and Happy Holidays, HO HO HOE.

My daughter is also eight. There was no talk about Santa being real or not this year around. It was nice. She just knew that Santa was coming to town.

The tricky part was getting the presents into the truck for our trip down to SoCal. We just put them in a big box and figured we'd tell her that it was some stuff we borrowed from Grandma if she asked.

Allow me to be a little bit radical and think that your little daughter only believed in Santa in order to keep you happy, heh...

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus
By Francis P. Church, first published in The New York Sun in 1897. [See The People?s Almanac, pp. 1358?9.]
We take pleasure in answering thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of The Sun:

Dear Editor?

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ?If you see it in The Sun, it?s so.? Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia O?Hanlon

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men?s or children?s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that?s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby?s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

My little one figured out the Santa deal by the age of six it was a combo of older kids around her (pricks!) and catching mom putting gifts under the tree.

BUT, the best one was the following....

On her 7th year/christmas there were presents under the tree that said To: _______ From: Santa, she grabbed the first one of them and just started laughing, got up and ran into her mom's bedroom, she came back with the roll of wrapping paper (that matched the "Santa Gift" and she said....

"See THIS PROVES IT! There Is No Santa, YOU and DADDY are really santa!"

So now she's Eight, knows there is no santa, tooth fairy, great pumpkin etc... BUT she is STILL hellbent that the EASTER BUNNY is REAL LMAO

My older sister told me there was no Santa Claus when I was pretty young (don't remember my exact age), but I was already a quick enough thinker to tell her not to tell our parents, or we might not get any more gifts from Santa...

Those are the questions that will be rough for me. I dont believe in lying but i will have to work on my active concealment skills.

A few years ago I was talking to someone from here at GFY (I don't remember who), and he was jealous that his ex-wife gives their kids more than he can. So he told his kids that Santa was fake. All in an attempt to impress them that he bought more for them that year than their mom did. He just couldn't live with Santa getting the credit for the toys he bought.

I don't think I believed in Santa since I was 4. My parents wouldn't let me tell my 18 month younger sister until she was 10 or so. OR ELSE!

Especially since our two daughters are going through those 'formative' years lately and starting to ask a few questions in that direction.

um, yea she already asked that one -- don't even remember what I said but I know I got away with it, for now!

when she is a bit older, we will have the full discussion and I will pour myself a hefty drink before I do it. LOL.

And the best part of all, we are Jewish but she wants to know is there is a Santa.

Oh and the latest questions...
what was Jesus' last name?
why do we have hair?
how do fish breathe?
how are cheetos made?
why was I born?

and that was only in the last couple weeks! she keeps me on my toes

not to be a dick, I'm all for Christmas spirit.. but if your 11 year old believes in Santa.. I'd really be worried about him..
( unless he's mentally challenged or something, in which case, kindly disregard my comment )

My daughter is 10 months old, but she talks so much that I *know* she's already asking those questions. Thankfully, I can't understand them yet so I don't have to answer

(And yes, since I work at home, I'm totally dreading the "Can I come and watch you work?" question )

Scarier question:

Mommy, can I go to work with you and see what you do for my report at school?

Or.. Mom, why is your name and address on the whois data for 40inchplus.com?

the first question...yep, she already has an 'interview' with me over holiday break about my 'job'. I sell shoes. Damn good ones I might add ;)

as for the second question...I'll tell her it is because I am 40 plus years old but not by far.

My daughter came home from school asking my wife the same question 2 years back. My wife passed the ball over to me, so i did what my dad did with me and told her the true story of Saint Claus (Kris Kringle) and how he became Santa.
It worked she took it pretty well.
