How can i have index page different from all the category pages?

Lets say in terms of advertising.

For example, I have a sidebar (that is auto inserted into the template) and I want to have some specific ads in there. But I don't want those ads to appear on category pages.

Whats the best way to do it?

make a separate page in your template. Most elegant way to divide index and category page.
