Furthermore, social networking sites are becoming a substitute for families as traditional ties become weaker, according to experts.

David Smallwood, an addictions expert with the Priory clinic, said that at least 10 per cent of the population were vulnerable to 'friendship addiction.

He said the site was unsuitable for people recovering from drug, alcohol and shopping addictions and could increase feelings of rejection through the friend 'request' function. Anyone who is rejected cannot then access the webpage of the person who refused the original request.

"Acquisition of friends is like any other fix but it's competitive. You judge yourself by how many friends you have online. You go out of your way to amass friends and that means people bend out of shape and become something they are not.

"To appear successful, you go and put yourself in credit card debt by buying clothes and handbags. I see patients who are on Facebook and my response is 'get yourself off it'.

"If you're an addict you need to do things to fix yourself and make yourself feel better. People in recovery look for ways of being 'fixed' and these websites can act the same way."

Facebook has more than 100 million users around the world.

However, a report published about mental health said sites such as Facebook could protect older people from social isolation.

Well that's what they want you to think, and it's kind of tricky finding the delete info on the site. It takes up to 14 days to fully delete and if you log in to your account in that time, I think it extends the time and also gives you the "chance" to undo the delete request.

I hadn't logged in to the account since 5 minutes after I created it for the sole purpose of accessing some pictures that a non-tech-savvy friend had posted, and when I logged in yesterday after getting a friend request via email, I had over 100 other requests for all kinds of shit I didn't even understand. I don't even know how people were finding me since I used all fake info for the account except for my email address which I do not give out. The whole thing seemed kind of creepy and weird so I wanted to get rid of it.

Click this link WHILE LOGGED IN and you should be able to submit the delete account form. If you click it while not logged in, it gives you a generic contact form.

I think cell phones are right up there on the list.

For some reason, people feel that they need to be on the phone talking every single second they have available. We have people that cannot afford to buy food spending hundreds of dollars a month on their cell phone bill.

Truly bizarre. Very very few people are that important that they need to be constantly in touch with somebody.

Lots of people are definitly addicted to social networking sites.
In an internal study we got done on our own network, wich dominates facebook in our regional market, most of our users of users visit our site before they check their email. The average user on our network spends 52 minutes online on our site in a day, comming back at 7 different occasions. We have some power users active in so many different of our networks they must spend all day on the site to acheive the status they have.

That's insane...

When I ran a BBS I had people online chatting or in the conference rooms who spent more time online than ANYTHING ELSE THEY DID ALL DAY. We also had a idle kick set at 300 seconds, so you had to be active somehow, and as sysop, I sometimes monitored people who were online and playing games to see if they really were active and ATK (at the keyboard) because with only 22 lines, we were always packed up full, soon as one line dropped, it would be ringing with someone else.

These people I met at our monthly user meets, and I can tell you that just talking with them for 5 minutes, it became crystal clear, they really did spend all day online.

Was very cool to have a system running like that, but felt bad for the people sometimes because I knew they were wasting their lives away.
