Best CSS tutorials/books?

Google sucks - they need to start sorting their search results by how recently the page content was updated. Most of these web development sites have tutorials that are way out of date.

What's the best all encompassing site for CSS positioning/layout information and tutorials?

not w3schools.

does Lynda.com have good CSS tutorials?

Check out this book O'Reilly has. The missing manual series are great. They also have other great books on CSS.
Actually I think they have great books on more subjects

Good luck !

http://www.alistapart.com/ has some nifty stuff.

Best way to learn is fucking around really. Its easier than it looks. Just a matter of swapping the shitty tables to nice clean divs and control the look of everything through a stylesheet. Once you know how to control a div in as many possible ways, the rest is easy. !

thanks for the link

no it's not so simple - not when 25% of surfers still use IE 6 - at least half the CSS layouts I see have CSS elements that are messed up in IE 6. It's the hacks and workarounds that make CSS a bitch - I still don't see what's so wrong with table layouts but I am experimenting with CSS now.

Some cool stuff here... http://meyerweb.com/eric/css/
Lot's of good stuff here... http://css.maxdesign.com.au/index.htm
Some decent links here... http://www.mezzoblue.com/zengarden/resources/
alistapart.com is good too.

I suggest getting the Web Developer plugin for Firefox. It has a ton of great features and is quite helpful when working with CSS (the css editor is nice and the Outline tools are especially helpful).

Most importantly, trial and error. Good luck.
