recommend a good digital SLR

Whats a good digital SLR for under $1000?

I just like to take photos, not a pro so no need to spend $3k - $5k on a camera, thanks.

I would only buy Canon or Nikon as you'll get something that is the best for you dollar, IMO.

You might be able to pick up a Canon rebel or 40D with something like a 17-85mm lens (good for all around use) for less than $1000 on ebay

Rebel and 40D are similar, but the 40D is better, bigger screen and metal body etc

I have a Canon Rebel XT and it is fine for normal use. If you want to be the next AaronM, Dean Capture, etc then no.

But for us normal people the Rebel XT is perfect

I just want something better than my Sony F717 for surface shots, not really for taking pics of models. My Sony still takes great pics but I want something with interchangable lenses, and better filters.

I spent a shitload, over $3k on my underwater camera though. Still havent got to dive with it yet.

I got a Nikon D80 body I'm selling for $500. A few hundred for a lens and you'd be set. I took these shots with it.

Any good SLR will do. The camera is the least important thing for taking good images. Most important are:

1 - creative talent (at least to a certain degree)
2 - lighting
3 - lens

Okay, so if 2 and 3 are important you are stuck with the big manufacturers like Nikon, Canon, Olympus and Sony (unless you have the budget for a +20k$ Hasselblad :-)

A good lens will set you back at least 1 to 2k $ a piece. Go full frame like the D700 Nikon. It's a perfect toy if you want to have fun :-)

If on a budget a used D70 or D80 Nikon will do just fine. Quality lenses for the DX format start at 800 bucks.

Some people (1 guy) here will tell you hands down you HAVE TO HAVE THE BEST CAMERA. I disagree. I think it's the carpenter not the tool. Look at DMFC. He could shoot an awesome image with a Holga if he wanted to.

No you said.. "any good SLR will do"

I was rebutting that statement with mine, then countered with the basic agreement.

I agree!
There's no use spending $1k on camera only, and camera itself is useless without "glasses"...

Those are nice pics.

I assume you have the manual, box, charger, etc for it?

the better the camera, the better the 'focus model' and I would recommend an environmentally sealed body if your shooting surf pics.

then you'll need a good long lens to reach out. you're looking at about 6K for both however it will last for 5 years before it's outdated and the lens will last forever.

or you can drop about $650 on a consumer body and drop the $1800 on long glass.

If I was going anywhere near the water or in the rain, I'd just use my underwater camera without the attached strobes. It actually takes really nice pics on the surface as well as underwater.

These Cannon Rebels dont look half bad either.

I'm not sure what the price is in USA but it should be cheaper. We have a Nikon D60 twin lens kit for $800ish here at the moment, and the D90 just came out which is the first digital slr with video and its about double the price with a single lens included.

There's plenty of camera kits in the $600 to $2000 range in both Nikon & Canon ranges if you just want a mid-range option.

I figured surf pics would be taken in the water... the ones I see look like they are taken from seedo's or something.

yeah, any nikon/canon consumer cam will do fine for ya. rebel, d40, redshoes d80.. whatever will do the job for ya...

The newer versions of the Canon rebel series are supposed to offer serious improvement over the XT at not too much of a price kick.

The Xti and Xsi, and there is another model right above those - the EOS 40D - here is a great comparison page of the three:
