if the Sh*t hits the Fan... how long will your money last?

I mean: with the money you have in the bank, how long can you live?
I was doing my math, and at my current expenditures, I can survive one whole year without bringing a penny in.
Cutting all superfluous expenses and tightening my belt, I have 25 months in the bank.
After that, I'll have to sell a kidney or something.

How about you?

If the shit hits the fan, money in the bank could very well be useless.

Thank God for my piggy bank.

hate to say it and im sure lots of people wont admit it but if my money just stopped coming in today

i would last about a month, maybe two

i know i know im not supposed to be living like that but alas that is how i am living

but im not afraid of hard manual labor to make money, ill do what it takes to keep myself going ive been at it on my own since i was like 11 years old mowing lawns for people so i could go buy a shake for $5 at the end of the day, nothing will hold me down

but yea, id like to save up some day for more but theres always something i need or someone in my family needs so ill just keep going at it hopefully one day ill have more in the bank

still though, im a happy guy seeing the best times of his life now so i cant complain

If shit hits the fan your money (dollars) will be worthless. You need gold and silver.

How is gold and silver going to help you? If "shit hits the fan" like everyone is talking about food, wood, etc is going to be more valuable than gold or silver.

I have about a year. However if things went kaput, money will be devalued. Imagine 1930s Germany. It could happen. Or zimbabwe. If that was the case it doesn't matter what you have in the bank those numbers mean shit.

In a GREAT depression - rich people are self sustaining. They can live on their land and their own skills indefinitely.

you're right, if things get extremely bad, there is a possibility that our money may not be worth much. Although during the Great Depression, money kept its value... the problem was that there was not enough money to go around (according to Wiki: "Federal Reserve, by not acting, allowed the money supply as measured by the M2 to shrink by one-third from 1929 to 1933")

Now, if the money does lose its value, most of us will be indeed be in deep doodoo! I own a couple of small empty properties that I could farm to feed myself and my family, but they're small, so we'll get very skinny very soon!

and... nope, I'm not showing my boobies... unless I need to pay for food ha!

Sure. You'll starve and have some shiny rocks. Because thats all they really are. Gold isn't a material that is really valued when things get so rough that people rather have wood to keep warm and food and water to stay alive.

If the proverbial shit hits the economic fan - folks with handyman skills will still be in demand to fix the basic necessity shit that breaks down.

The wet-behind-the-ears people who haul their university '...ology' degree around in a little frame but don't know shit about how the real world works...will be the first in the soup kitchen lineups.

Curious how many of you that say they have land, etc. (cash buffer of 8 months to a year is always good). can actually perform many of the tasks that would be needed in the first place. They have really fallen out of favor over the past 40-50 years and just a few weird people like myself still participate in performing them - let alone are already equipped for it.

Who already has gardens, knows their soils, has compost going etc. Not all soil just because it is land is good to go food wise. Do you also know your climate zones, micro climates, crop rotations, and even what grows seasonally? Do you even currently have seeds in storage?
Do you know how to preserve food either by canning, drying, salting, or dehydrating? Do you have the equipment already to do so? Most places currently do not even carry canning supplies much anymore and if it becomes needed what are the chances anyone will have any in stock.
Have you butchered an animal or know how? Raising them can be easy enough assuming you have some basic information on vaccines, sickness, birth assistance, etc. Hell anyone know how to go from milk to cheese since milk often does not last.
Do you even own basic tools required to work land or fix things around the house and property?
Also happen to have not only what it takes to protect what you have but the will to follow through with it?

There really is a lot more to it than just saying well I have some land and will live off of it if I have to. Honestly think if shit did get that bad that everything will just keep on working as it does? Water will still flow out of every pipe, electricity will not be an issue, same with gas and such.

Live in a village with a farm at one end of the road. Plus Eva's parents and grandmother can do all that. My PAs Dad has guns and I can skin and gut rabbits and pheasants. Plus there's a river in front of our house with what look like trout in it.

If the business went belly up we could live for years on the money in the bank, house is paid for and we have no debts. Plus the content is always going to be worth something even if we have to discount it.

If the banks went belly up then we might have to sell the house. Scary thought.

I suspect it will get a lot harder before it gets better.

But look on the bright side guys. If it gets tough the Tubes will have big problems and then some will be back paying for porn.

This thread just really got me thinking..
And the sad fact is, with the slow down all my business, promotions etc have seen these last few months, if shit hits the fan I've got all of about 3 weeks before I'm literally fucked.

3 weeks before I can't afford food, 3 months tops before being evicted, 4 or 5 months before all utilities would be cut for non payment ( notice I'm already evicted )

I can't help but feeling completely hopeless right now, but I'm taken steps to stock pile at least a bit of cash, by eliminating all expenses I don't need, IE : in the last week I've quit smoking, been driving less to conserve gas money, and trying to pay all my bills to zero so I can at least ride things out for awhile if I have to.

My fear is I'm doing this too late.

With a wife and a baby, I think it's just half of the year especially now my baby is starting to crave for chocolates and candies.

I hope sales and projects would be better though we're fully booked at this time. I'd love to have more clients and do more sales.

I could probably live of the cash in the bank for about 3-5 years. House and car(s) are paid off.

Finally someone who's being honest.

I don't think I'd last too long myself, although I do have assetts such as land which could be sold off. Whether their value drops significantly due to whatever circumstances cause the shit to hit the fan in the first place is another matter... I assume we're talking about a global crisis rather than breaking a finger...

Interesting thread.

We just planted our first vege/herb garden, and while theres a little learning involved its great that we are starting to harvest our own fresh herbs already and the veges are well on their way! We also are hitting the farmers markets that are springing up each weekend more now and its amazing how badly the supermarkets were ripping both us and the farmers off! When a farmer can sell us a cauliflower for $3 when the supermarket was selling them at $7, and each tomato costs us 40c, instead of fucking $1.50 ... and finding out that selling to us is still giving the farmer twice what he was getting from his supplier ... wow! People are just going to wake up and start cutting out the fat supermarket chains and start going to the source again.

I am not at the point where I need to cut costs, but just this year myself and my girl started to cut down our excessive lifestyle. We were churning through 8k a month without even breaking a sweat.. and after cutting down on expensive nights out, junk we didn't need, and being a little smarter with shopping plus cooking we have managed to make amazing cuts without much of a change in quality of life. Many others will do the same.

The main places closing down around here are the crappy restaraunts, most of the coffee houses like starbucks, and a lot of the trendy cafes, plus a pub/bar or two. The electronics and expensive luxury stores are also starting to drop too which can be expected, though most core businesses are hurting a little yet not as much because people still need basic things.
