lets say i have a virtual account and put some mainstream and adult stuff on there. does it have any negative effect on the search engine rankings? or would it be better to have separate IPs?

Most would say it is best to not share the same IP between mainstream and adult. One reason shared IP's suck.

About the shared IP... don't do it... except for bots, there are lots of (DNS) tools for people to find out what you are running on your server.

I've had great results with both shared and unique IPs.

But with lots of bigger virtual hosts (Dreamhost) you might be sharing your IP with tons of other sites and I've never seen an impact from that (yes I have a Dreamhost account :D)

negative effect my ass, I've had a street fights site that was on page one for so many months (till I totally neglected it) and another site that I still update, both on two different virtuals sitting pretty right next to my water sports and shemale sites

well i'd say at least 50-70% of websites on the net share ips.. so i doubt there's any difference in seo rankings, maybe there is but minimal.

for each dedicated ip you get like 50-100 websites on a shared.. sometimes even more.. so yeah, but of course, having more ips is a better way to get better rankings

I do not think IPs matter in any significant way, it's all about the content.

I think there was a time that having dedicated ip's was a bigger factor, but once 'seo' people noticed that, google adjusted the algorithm to where it matters little now, if at all

I did not say that was my opinion, but there are more mainstream customers than adult, and if you ask, most will say it makes a difference. At least they buy that way.

Using different IPs is good to keep your websites organized.

It is also a way to shield reverse-IP lookup if your mainstream business can be negatively affected by being associated with adult websites.
