:stoned Americans Send 2x as many txt messages as Europeans

Forget splashy video, music and games; text messaging will continue to be the "cash cow of mobile data revenues for some time to come," according to a new report from Portio Research. The mobile messaging market is expected rake in $130 billion in revenues by the end of the year, and is on pace to climb to $224 billion by 2013. At that level, mobile messaging will make up 60 percent of all non-voice service revenues. At least some of those increased revenues might be due to the higher price of a text message and operators' push to encourage more bundled services at the point of sale. Interestingly enough, although the U.S. is considered late to the SMS party, Americans now send double the number of messages that Europeans average each month. Filipinos lead the industry with an average of 755 messages per subscriber each month and Chinese subscribers are hovering just over 100 messages a month. SMS is the messaging tool of choice everywhere but Japan where mobile email has surpassed the use of text messaging

They also eat twice as much. Maybe the extra texting is from telling their partners not to forget the kfc megabucket.

You ought to see Australian teens...it' a wonder their fingers don't cramp they text so much. Seems they can't go longer than 30 seconds either checking to see if anyone has texted them, or without texting someone else. Ridiculous.

I think one of the reasons SMS messages were slow to catch on in the US is because calls were cheaper than in most other countries and SMS message prices were pretty high at first. They have come down a lot.

Isn't it true that reception in the U.S is sub-par? Perhaps that's why people are sending texts instead of calling?

Filipinos are nuts over texting. With that said, monetizing text messaging here is problematic as exemplified by the sad experience of ZED mobile content. Zed provides heavy selling mobile content and is very profitable, however, local players want it shut out of the local market because it is 100% foreign owned in violation of the Constitution of the Philippines. Sad how the constitution is set up to discourage investment and job creation.

doesn't it cost to recieve in the usa, too?

(thats what i heard. no idea if it is true. sounds a bit stupid tbh, cos you could just send thousands of texts to someone and it would cost them...?)

It's free for most, if the plan they signed up with, includes text messages. Some of the lower plans do not include text messages, and the customer will be billed for each message in and out.

Their are also foreign text messages, that is if someone from argentina sends you a message, then you will get charged.

Does anyone know the exact charge per carrier for text messages, if not included in your plan.
