Wikipedia Founder Blasts Nude Girl Censors

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said he has considered taking legal action against the group that blacklisted Wikipedia in the United Kingdom because of a nude photo on an album cover featured in one of its articles. Article here...

Guess everyone should be giving him a pat on the back!

Well, considering the amount of articles on Wikipedia...Talk about a HUGE can of worms...

"Over the weekend, the IWF put Wikipedia on a list of sites containing potentially illegal material because a user pointed out that an image of an underage nude girl on an article about the album Virgin Killer appeared to be child sexual abuse. German rock band the Scorpions released the album in 1976."

legally, one would wonder if an innocent user of wikipedia could end up charged in some countries (maybe even the U.S.) for browsing that page on wikipedia and ending up with that image in their cache?

just curious how the law reads where that is allowed in some situations yet would get somebody thrown in jail in other situations?

umm i think it would have to do with the difference between *actual CP* and images like album covers... i mean, theres plenty of albums with underage girls on them and we havent locked up Eric Clapton yet...

yeah, but the law doesn't work that way does it, unless there is some clause that allows "album covers"?

Well until they lock up Eric Clapton, it does work that way.

so in other words, if a new band wants to get some attention, they have carte blanche to put nude pictures of 13 year old girls on their album covers because Clapton set the precedent?

not sure what you want from me, I simply posted the cover in question, i am not here to debate the legalities behind it.

not hassling you, it just struck me as legally strange, so I was posing the questions for anyone that might be a lawyer or legal expert to interpret what it is about

The difference is they're ostensibly selling music, not porn. That's why "artists" can do things we can't do, because they aren't telling you they shot the photos for jack-off purposes.

It's all about the packaging, not the actual product.

that makes sense I guess, so pictures that would normally result in charges are allowed as a packaging as long as the actual product is something done by artists? Hopefully all the cp trading scum don't figure that out and start bands and put out albums then.

That's what's fucked up about CP and obscenity laws in general; if the context it's presented or created in is not overtly to arouse or get someone off, then it's okay (or more likely to be okay) than if it's labeled porn. And CP people already know that, which is why the teen/pre-teen/child "model" sites have been so controversial; they're (or were) getting away with CP by calling it something else even though everyone who joined those sites was doing so because they're pedos.

I'm not arguing for more hysterical and retarded laws, for the record, just saying the double standards are pretty retarded. People are irrational about this stuff in general. I'm sure there are people out there masturbating to diaper commercials, but no one ever talks about banning those and throwing the people who made them in prison.

Oh well. Sort of off topic, but yeah -- I wish people would focus on shit that really does hurt people and kids in obvious, measurable ways.

Glad to see that other people are victims of arbitrary banning as well. Sometimes the people doing the banning are just on a power trip.
