Experienced Coder Looking For The Next Adventure

Some of you may know me, and others probably don't. I've been engaged on a number of projects lately and have kept my board-presence low. I moderate another popular forum (I won't disrespect JBM by stating which one, but you can probably figure it out), but have found a home here as well.

As a brief introduction for those of you I haven't worked with yet, I'm the guy who coded Autoblogger Pro Stand Alone (a platform-independent auto-propagating content publishing platform) and Feed Pushers (morphing RSS feeds for sponsor programs). Here are some screen shots to refresh your memory (click for full-size images):

I've been doing contract work for the past year or so, and have found it to be very satisfying overall. I'm looking for the next "big thing," however. I don't want to get stuffed in a closet working on something no one will see. I want that "trophy" to point to and say "yeah .. I did that for that company." I want to set the world on fire with what we create together.

To that end, I'm going to release something "into the wild" that I've had under my hat for a while. This is a calculated risk on my part: sure, someone can take it and develop it, but I want potential partners to have a peek inside of how my mind works. Judging from the past, people generally create "me too" applications of virtually anything I do, so I assure you that I have many more ideas, projects and prototypes beyond this one.

The file is a PDF, and it essentially lays out a content aggregation system that uses some of the auto-creation ideas I've become known for mixed with CMS-like features across a network of branded properties. It can be downloaded by clicking the following thumb (right-click to save, of course):

Please excuse the sponsor-biased tone of the document, as it was created with a company in mind that was seeing lackluster affiliate performance and wanted to enhance their "in-house" sales strategies.

I am intensely focused and goal-oriented. I code primarily in PHP, but am willing to adopt other languages as needed.

Do you have something exciting going on at your company? Are you ready for the next big thing? Contact me, let's talk.

Resume and references are, of course, available upon request.

I don't get paid a red cent for anything involving Autoblogger, unfortunately. I've tried to address that issue with Chio, with no success. I coded it, support it for a year or so, and put my heart and soul into it ... and I don't get anything out of the deal ... so I'm not sure how much help I can be.

I'll tell you this much, though: it's tempting to make something that's better than ABPSA and give everyone who ever bought an ABPSA license a free copy ... I've been hearing some very bad things lately (I haven't checked GFY in ages, been so busy with Feed Pushers, etc) about some of the things people got screwed on, and it's got me pretty steamed.

I have full control of my GFY account now, and all posts from now on will actually be me. This is the good news.

Thanks very much! It's been a long road, but if the bottom-feeds don't creep out from under their rocks too much, I'll probably stick around. Time will tell.

                Meaning, what is my background?

I started out in business development with one of the largest manufacturers of sterling silver in the United States. My clients were Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, Roses, Service Merchandise, Home Shopping Network, QVC, and others. I became their youngest Vice President and some time later ended up sitting on their board until charting a course for their eventual acquisition by a competitor around 2003.

After that experience, I was the Vice President of Business Development for the company that brought out Python 2.0. We hired the guys who created the Python programming language (what Google was written in), and enhanced the evolution and adoption of the Python language, as well as freed it from its restrictive licensing.

Aside from Google, I also dealt with Lucent Technologies (then still closely related to AT&T), SGI, Sun Microsystems, Infoseek, VA Linux, Red Hat, IBM, Disney, Yahoo!, and others while performing my duties with the company.

During those times and afterward, I contracted or worked as an employee for a number of companies in the industry, which are listed on my resume and/or cover sheet. I have architected a number of technologies which are used today in the industry and beyond, and continue to assist in the development of related toolsets.

If you're asking from a technological perspective what languages I speak, I'd tell you that I speak PHP, Python, HTML, CSS, Perl, JavaScript, AJAX, and a number of others. I am comfortable in FreeBSD, Linux, and Windows environments.

If, on the third hand, I didn't actually answer your question, let me know .. LOL!

As far as relational databases go, I have primarily worked with MySQL (directly from the command line, through phpmyadmin, and through object-based interfaces), Oracle, and PostgreSQL.

I consider myself to be "most" familiar with MySQL, both in medium and large databases.

it really does look amazing when you put it all together on a forum like that, but how much of it is real? haha

hell, wasn't the original ABP just a mismatch of plugins all loaded into a default wordpress install? lol...NICE coding for such an advanced coder, hahahahaha

Hey there, Chris. Will do. I haven't had a "job" in the industry for a while now ... I've stayed to contract work mostly, although many of my contracts have been fairly long-term (years).

I'm looking mainly to find a stable home to release new and exciting technologies.

Hehe, you're actually thinking of someone else. When I took over was when it got the facelift and new features. Since I have been disassociated with Autoblogger Pro, I don't know of any significant changes other than it hasn't been maintained and now is unlikely to be fully functional.

You are probably thinking of the "original" Autoblogger Pro, which was a collection of plug-ins for WordPress. The one I wrote was the one that stood completely separate from WordPress, and I wrote that entirely from scratch, using no other code than the aggregator, SimplePie, and what came from my ten fingers.

Sorry for the confusion, and I hope you're more clear on it now.

                                    Thank you.

Yes, I do like shiny things. If you follow the link to my homepage, then to my MySpace and click on "My Toys," you will see many shiny things that I like. We just added two more shiny things that I haven't yet posted there, and I just got my wife some shiny new rings that I constantly find myself staring at.

I'm also enthralled with the "9" button on my phone for whatever reason.

I'm a little sensitive about it, though, so if you could please pass me a tissue ...

I see your ICQ window just popped up on my desktop, so I'm cruising over there to chat .. looking forward to it as always!

Hey there, John, it's been a while since we've chatted. I hope you have the projects rolling that you were working on last time we talked .. they sounded very interesting.

I'm not specifically looking for a full-time position, but if the right project is underway (i.e., if you're setting the world on fire again like you have done in the past), we should definitely talk. I have some technologies that would "come along" in the deal that might make the family of products you already have happier.

My only hesitance about relocation is that I have a lake house, and I see this every time I look out of my window (LOL):

thanks for creating a program i bought that doesn't work.

Btw, I believe the coder maintains his work. So you'd be free to fix it and help some of us that got fucked over.

Isn't that the same view you used to say that all the sales of ABP bought you?

So what are you offering? You site says you want a min 60k to work on a project and now you want to own the project, too? If you're looking for a partnership with someone I've got a bunch of ideas and existing businesses that are making cash that need help, but I'm not PAYING a partner, my partnerships cost all involved up front in time & $ and if we're lucky they pay off. You can't have your cake and eat it, too...

I did all kinds of free support for about year, but how long would you work for free when you were continually promised payment and then it wasn't delivered? I think it's different if you get PAID for something .. but since I'm no longer associated with the company that sells it and doesn't pay me a dime, it's an awkward situation. I appreciate the large amount of people who posted GFY threads and sent ICQ's, e-mails, liquor (thanks Andre!), Omaha Steaks, and Harry and David baskets ... but the small few who made life difficult for the FREE job I was doing turned me off to the whole thing, to be honest.

No offense, but how much free work do you do for companies you no longer deal with? I'm not going to beat a dead horse, but I feel like that needed a reply.

If you're asking me to actually change the codebase itself ... although I have the sourcecode, I consider it unethical to release or revise it, no matter how things went down with the whole situation.

I support any efforts you make to hold the company that sold you the product accountable, and if I am ever paid for my efforts, I'd be more than happy to give some more free help, like I've always offered ... I've never put "limits" on the time I'd support any of my products, like many companies do (and are right to do).

I think you're confusing ABP with SexKey. SexKey has been an amazing sponsor for me over the years ... the Porsche, the house, the boat, etc, etc ... all credit is due SexKey on those.

However, I did buy a number of things "expecting" a payment from Autoblogger ... unfortunately, that money was stolen. I don't want to open up that can of worms .. it's water under the bridge, and if someone's life is so hollow that they need to worry about that, I only pity them.

My pay rates for contract work help me to keep the number of clients I work with to a minimum. I've been fortunate enough not to have a problem commanding reasonable rates for work produced. I'm open to any ideas that help me achieve the goal I stated above: I want to set the industry on fire with the "next" thing. I enjoy innovating and seeing people use the things I develop. Doing contract work on things many people never see (backend systems, algorithm work, strategic planning, etc) pays well, but doesn't translate into working on that "next big thing," unfortunately. I hope that makes sense.

I'm looking to be part of something bigger here. This isn't a dollar-centric play, so the money to be made from specialized projects is a side issue in my opinion. I'm comfortable with my income ... I just want to be part of something bigger that Feed Pushers, Autoblogger, etc. I don't want to forever be the guy who wrote those software products. I want to be the guy who did "the next big thing."
