Digital Cable TV - Question

Can you just buy your own boxes? It sucks to have to pay like 20 bucks a month premium for every outlet you have digital cable on...

I'd rather buy some cheap box or something and share 1 outlet, can i do that?

I believe this is still true, but someone will have to confirmthey didn't hcange their minds after this ruling. Quoted from an article I remembered reading on slashdot:
"The FCC rendered a decision today against a Comcast appeal that centers on integrated security features in set-top cable boxes. The decision comes at the end of a long standing feud between the FCC and cable companies over the matter. The result is that starting July 1st, cable boxes distributed by cable companies must not be tied directly to a cable provider via internal security features. This rule is viewed as the first step in creating a market for set-top cable boxes. Comcast does have the right to appeal and has said they will do so. From the article: 'Several major consumer electronics manufacturers have argued that if set-top boxes weren't directly linked to the provision of cable service, they could enter the set-top market. Consumers could get a cable card from their service provider that they could insert into a set-top box purchased at a consumer electronics store. The cards would ensure that consumers could only access channels that they paid for.'"

I looked up one of the boxes once and they were like $800... so you would need it for about four years.

what your paying for is the rent of the hardware. if you go buy one of those boxes with dvr ect you looking at $450 give or take per box. so paying the $6/month might not be so bad. the other fee is the actual tv service.

At the moment, You need a set top box to get the digital channels. The cable company (scum bags) use the MAC address/SIM card to authorize your box to receive the digital channels.

I have basic cable (no box) + cable modem and it is $100/month
They keep reducing the number of channels that I get with that and there are only 4 channels in HD for that price.
It's insane.
