Educational DVDs - Who Loves Them???

back in 2001..I was working as a retoucher & color corrector for Penthouse Photographer Stephen Hicks. He asked me one day to build a web page for his site and I was like ..."shit man, I'm a color corrector / retoucher. I don't know noth'n about building a web page"! He "suggested" that I figure it out because I may need to build or edit some pages in the future.

Immediately I went to the internet and start searching for an application to use for building web pages and found DreamWeaver. I ordered the program and had it FedEx'd in. Then I found Lynda.com and ordered a DreamWeaver educational DVD and also had it FedEx'd in. I spent a whole weekend learning as much as I could about DreamWeaver and when I walked in the office on Monday morning....I was ready to start buildling & editing web pages. Stephen was blown away and I was too.

It was at that moment that I realized the power of educational DVDs. For me, it's the way to learn any new apps. I hate reading books and manuals.

Anywayz, just got me to wondering if you guys love educational DVDs as much as I do

I've always been a big book person...

When I needed to learn flash... I turned to Hillman Curtis...

When I needed to learn code... I turned to PeachPit Press

When I needed to learn photoshop and design... well to be honest that one's been a lifelong process so I couldn't pin it to one source, but there have been many, many books, and even many more "apprentice" hours picking up my trades.

Right now I'm watching educational DVD's for Final Cut Pro 6, Apple Color, Compressor and Soundtrack Pro 2. I even picked up a DVD on switching from PC to Apple. Don't laugh...it's really come in handy

I've never used one of these dvds before. Do you guys sit in front of your computers while watching playing/pausing or watch then go back to the computer?

I usually watch them on my computer. Most come with exercise files so you can open up the app & follow along...although I never do it.

I went about 10 years without professionally picking up a camera, thanks to a helicopter crash... sorry, but we missed the New Kids trailer by about 50 yards.

When I did pick up a cam again it was still, not video. I used a couple of online forums, some weekend seminars and several DVDs to retrain... oh yeah, a lot of TFCD sessions. I've used online/downloadable videos for learning Lightroom and certain things with Photoshop. Sekonic has a couple of free ones on metering. Scott Kelby is definitely a good teacher. I also subscribe to the PhotoVision DVD that comes every other month (photovisionvideo.com) for inspiration.

Now I just need a Dean Capture educational DVD!

Oh yeah, Lynda.com definitely rocks.
