Good Lens to buy for Canon 50d

I would look at the "L" range only.
Cheap Canon lenses are at their best when used as paperweights.

I have the 40D and buying the new 5D II. I use the 16-35mm II 2.8L for my indoor shoots and 24-70mm 2.8L for my outdoor shoots. Image quality and sharpness is great. Colors are very vivid. Next purchase is the 70-200mm 2.8 L IS

Hope I could help!

Though the $60 50mm 1.8 isn't too shabby.

I second the 70-200mm 2.8 L IS. Great lens!

Primes are easier to get right... the cheap zooms are crap though... and yes, the 50mm f/1.2 L is, from what I've heard, ridiculously overpriced/hyped compared to the f/1.8.

1) Outdoor/Indoor sports like Soccer, Football, Baseball...

2) Product sales like Vases, Antiques that maybe are shot 1-2 feet from the camera.

3) Weddings, Family & Friends types of pictures inside and outside.

Also does anyone know which flash is good? Do I need more then 1?

Lenses are the long term investment, the body is disposable. (Ok, so that's a little sensationalist, but technically the body will be obsolete within about 18 months... the lenses will keep you going for years and years.)

If you're doing commercial photography then forget "consumer" grade zoom lenses. Stick with L. I would also recommend avoiding EF-S lenses since you cannot use them on a non 1.6 crop camera. Remember you're investing in lenses... ;)

Don't newer lenses have better optics? Like image stabilization and shit like that?

So far it's awesome, but I don't have much to compare it to. It fits well and isn't too heavy or too light.

Yeah, of course there are advances made in lens technology, but the difference probably won't be as remarkable as each new incarnation of a digital camera body. I'm not suggesting you buy a set of lenses now and then sit and do nothing for the next 10 years, rather that you should make careful choices when you DO need one (and perhaps pay a bit more for the quality version) since they're probably going to last you a long time...
