Are peel ads overrated?

I never used one on my sites so i don't know any stats but i always had the feeling they are more of a sponsor gimmick than actually a tool that converts your stuff really well.

It may be a bit late for those...

The msn message style popups could work though.

Clicking it on your site or clicking the ad itself so they go the sponsor program? And did it convert any better than other types of ads?

it did in the beginning. I was doing fairly well for a while turning nonprofitable blogs into moneymakers. all i was doing was some theme changes and adding a pagepeel. i created my own pagepeels for the sites that were converting best for me already in the niche. sites which offered good content and had a good look to them. in many cases i was linking directly to the signup page from the peel.

specifically i had sologirl specific blogs which were doing great with pagepeels right to the signup form. old sologirl blogs increased average monthly profit almost across the board for me with nothing new other than a pagepeel to the signup form.

curious surfers couldn't help but click to see what they went to. so long as you were sending your traffic to a good landing page it was converting. did it convert any better than other ad creatives? i don't think i'd say that. but it was certainly getting bigger numbers to the signup page, which without a doubt registered as increased sales.

same goes for the msn popups, which are also in my opinion passing their prime at this point.

surfers just love flashy new shit. they are stupid. flash banners, page peels, msn pops, popover blocks. even simple mouseovers will increase clicks. when things liek the flash page peel are new, they will pull the people in in droves. but then like any ad creative, they get played out and in the eyes of the surfer become just another banner.

i still say your best ad is a text ad....

I put some up on some blogs of mine a while back. My results were decent, but I didn't see much of an increase in sales. The peel ads made some sales, but whatever they gained was lost in other ads so in the end it was kind of zero sum game.

if a surfer wants to join a site he'll click a text link, a surfer doesnt need a page peel to do it.

So true. Very true in mainstream. I ran a blog network test of rotating ad image banners vs text. Text ads always did better.
