California lawmaker introduces bill to legalize marijuana

Quote:
Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, a San Francisco Democrat, introduced a bill Monday that if approved by the California Legislature would put pot on the same legal footing as alcohol. Adults over the age of 21 would be allowed to buy it, and driving under the influence of marijuana would be prohibited.

Under Ammiano's proposal, which has been endorsed by some law enforcement officials, pot would be taxed at a rate of $50 per ounce and bring an estimated $1 billion into state coffers.

In 1996, California became the first state to legalize medical marijuana.

Nice thought, but as my buddy in Homeland Security has told me many times, just like in the case of medicinal pot, Fed trumps state. So they can just keep arresting people regardless of state laws.

So he welcomes the states to pass whatever they like. Then they can come goose stepping into those states and make some newspaper, and Fox News headliner busts to justify their existence..

Huge progress in the last 10 years... Thanks California and thank you Emerald Triangle... Boulder's right behind you. Denver legalized up to an oz. a few years back. It will be good to see this prohibition put behind us one of these days! (I lived up in Boulder Creek, outside of Santa Cruz back in the early '90's)

If they legalized it on a state and federal level in multiple states, I have a franchised business for it all ready to go, soup to nuts, down to the menus, brand of safe and door security systems.

Legalize it and tax it. They'd generate and save money and they'd reduce congestion in the court system. Hopefully logic will prevail.

This is a big step in our country being "SMART" instead of moronic lol. This will pass sooner or later somewhere in the states and prostitution will follow. Gambling could come as well, the three together = huge tax dollars for the states.

Almost every American President before Barry, from Washington to Clinton to Bush, has had a pot addled past. Clinton purportedly tried and failed to smoke a joint, Bush was a boozer, but messed with coke and pot from time to time, Washington even grew marijuana on his farm. But as far as we know, none have admitted to smoking as much pot as Obama. He wrote extensively about his stoner past in his book Dreams of My Father, and in a 2007 interview stated ?When I was a kid I inhaled frequently. That was the point.? Anyone who wonders what kind of future a pothead can have should take a hard look at Barack Obama. Not only can you grow up to be ridiculously smart, you can grow up to be President.

It should happen but it wont...there is way too much money at stake to legalize it.

the federal law trumping state law is arguable technically only the constitution trumps state law but it is arguable of course the states could call a constitutional convention and strip the federal government of over broad powers (admittedly unlikely any time soon.)

but its a nice thought....

It sounds like a lot. It would cost $6.25 in taxes per 1/8 ounce. It should probably be a percentage because of price differences by quality.

If it was legalized then I can only assume the production costs would drop. Resulting in a lower price over all even after the steep tax.

It doesn't matter what Obama thinks. LAW IS LAW. Unless he DOES something about it, and changes federal law. He can carry on thinking what ever the fuck he likes.

Federal law trumps state law.

California can make pot legal, however it wouldn't be legal for them to tax it. In Denver pot isn't illegal. But it still is in the state. So state police can arrest you for it, and city police could leave you alone. Or city police could cite you for breaking state law, or even federal law.

People are correct that the federal trumps the states on this issue. Nevertheless, showing strong state support for the issue does weaken the federal case.

Especially when our economy sucks and our President admitted on his own audio autobiography to smoking pot as a teen "Enthusiastically!"

As an American and a Vermonter I ask that President Obama consider these issues seriously, as they may affect the long term economic health of Ben & Jerry's.

Ok but the entire ounce would be like $100 or something, compared to $300-$500 that's an amazing price. The only problem would be the people still selling it not paying taxes on it but if the stores did it right it'd probably be cheaper and more convenient than waiting in a parking lot for 20 minutes.
