:stoned Obama begins delivering on marijuana campaign statements

To those watching from the sidelines, this is a big development: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...MN2016651R.DTL

Federal preemption is the legal basis for pot dispensary raids and pot-related arrests by the Feds. By giving more leeway to the states on this issue, state-based medical marijuana laws would be allowed to (pardon the pun) bud and bloom

Also, state-based research on medical marijuana might be lifted. If clear scientific research is produced regarding marijuana's medical usage, medical marijuana might become legal in all 50 states.

Let's hope this new initiative isn't a half-baked (there goes the puns again) notion.

Not going to happen. In the next decade we might see a loosening of the state raids but no way its going legal. Obama and his team have allready stated that they do NOT support legalization in an fashion on the change.gov site when that was the top interest of the people. There are too many cigarette and alchohol lobbyists with big money stopping this from happening. Sucks but its true. No way anything changes in all 50 states until the US goes bankrupt, which might happen though.

Lord knows we can't have grown adult people enjoying themselves or having any freedom of thought. We have to keep the Fun Police busting everybody for partying. It's the only way to save this country!
Jesus, what would our founding fathers say if they could see how the goddamn govt. is controlling everything we do? I'd bet Thomas Jefferson would hang us all for being traitors to the original ideals of our country and allowing the govt. to have all this power.

Remember that Alcohol is the DESTRUCTION of mankind. People back in the days were constantly drinking on the job and still do! Booze makes you mean and violent and totally destroys motor function and this country has RUN on it for decades... The mindset that pot will somehow make us all morons is a pretty inane mindset considering Alcohol has yet to achieve that FULLY in it's long powerful stint as the NUMBER ONE DRUG.

Change is in the works. One month in, and Obamas done more for the american people then Bush did in eight years.

I wouldn't be surprised if Obama opens an investigation into the previous administration, namely their involvement in 9/11, the lies they told us that got them into Iraq, their smashing of the geneva convention, and their intrusion into the personal lives of thousands of Americans.

Obama is going to be a revolutionary president. And he is at heart, a revolutionary himself.

Power to the people.

legalize it and tax the shit out of it. Make money off it instead of burning money like we are with our "war on drugs"

Sure we'll have marijuana related accidents as well as addicts, but no worse than alcohol. I don't smoke because I don't like to feel lazy and nonproductive, but I still think it would be a good move.

Per an earlier thread about MJ legalization, even if it were to happen it's not a certainty that there will be much economic boost due to a substitution effect.

Why are people even talking about Obama flat-out legalizing weed? The only thing that has come out of the white house lately regarding marijuana is that Eric Holder said the DEA will stop raiding medical marijuana dispenseries.

The state of California is throwing around the idea of legalizing weed but it has nothing to do with Obama.

Actively pursuing the taxation?

The state of California has been taxing the medicinal marijuana for awhile now.

pursuing the legalization of weed to tax... from what I understand it will be up to the states to determine if they want weed legal.

sounds like some things are gonna change in regards to weed real soon...

Oh you meant taxing it when it's completely legal across the board. I thought you were talking about taxing the medicinal marijuana, which they already do.

Did you see his first televised press con? He was asked, by whom eludes me, if he would be looking into possible war crimes perpetrated by the Bush administration. His answer was to the effect of: "Put the bill on my desk and i'll take a look at it."
I do know that war crimes and 9/11 are two different thingds, but I think if enough people scream about it, it might happen. Obama may be just another politician, but I have faith, and very much hope that he is a man of the people.
I've heard it said many times that to change the system, you must work within that system. You never know. He may be the man. 3 years 11 months to find out, give or take a few days.

Obama is specifically referring to medical marijuana patients and the rights they have to not have their doors kicked in the middle of the nght, thrown from their wheel chair, tied up on the ground like drug war lord.

you are clouding the discussion with this "it wont be legal in 50 states" argument, no one is aying it is, not even Obama or Holder.

But the 14th state for medical marijuana is on the way and that means we are on our way to half the states having medical marijuana laws to protect patients.

grow for the government? Why would anyone do that?

Americans have set up collectives to grow for PATIENTS and people who need it, not so government can get bigger and richer.

Grow your own, for yourself or those in need. Not the government

There are cities in California that have very nice coop grow houses going and it is definitely not for the government, its for those in need, and those who want to use medical marijuana. You can give plants away, give away cuttings for clones, make cookies for cancer patients etc... that is going to help, nothing to do with government collecting funds on something they have no right to tax.

I am not taxed on my tomato garden, nor any of the plants i grow and harvest vegaetables and fruit from, so marijuana should be no different., no tax. Grow !!

the power has always been with the states, however, the DEA keeps kicking in doors. That is why you see the president making new american policy. Because he stated he would stop using tax dollars and funds to arrest, prosecute, sick people or those using medical marijuana.

States have had the power to do this for a long time, Bush has wanted to do away with it. He also encouraged DEA to raid. Obama wants to stop that.

What really scares me is that the raids still continue today despite the fact he has been the president for a month. Just because its not his appointed drug czar, is he not still his employer? WTF?

Which is still a HUGE change in policy. Remember, Federal preemption is a huge power and they are relaxing it for this particular issue.

As a patient and advocate, yes, medical marijuana and patient rights mean a lot to me.
My wife is a patient as well, and so patient rights also mean a lot to me.

I just can't believe that anyone would vote SOLELY on this issue, when the country is headed down a sewer hole - and that if both presidential candidates had similar views on medical marijuana, that in that case you wouldn't even bother to vote. That's what stuck out to me in the thread - so that's what I commented on. No great mystery.
