Films that 'Challenge you' to watch?

OK, Im not sire exactly how to word what Im thinking here, and this IS a 'spur pf the moment kinda post... But see if you follow me...

I'm NOT talking about 'Graphic' Horror or 'Torture' films... I don't mean 'Nasty' for the sake of being nasty...

I am talking about films where you really feel sorry for the characters... And its kinda challenging to watch...

For example, the 'Mother' in Requiem fora dream... She wants to go on TV... And loves her son... But ends up more fucked up than him in the end...

Dunno if the above makes total sense... But if you think you understand what I am getting at...

Then please post some 'Challenging Films'....

Thanks!

Hopeful ending or confirmation of hopelessness ending?

This one comes to mind: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0201631/

I'll post others as well, just happened to see this one recently

A french movie called Irreversible.

A couple guys end up going to jail for murdering a rapist they think raped and beat the shit out one of their wives. The film progresses in reverse order...starting with them brutally murdering the rapist. It goes on to show the rape scene and there is a little twist that makes you really feel sorry for the two guys that killed the rapist. Don't want to give it away for those that haven't seen it.

The rape and the murder scenes are some of the most graphic I have ever seen in a mainstream film.

I found born on the 4th of july kind of disturbing. I don't know if most people do, but found they pretty accurately showed the distress of trying to come to terms with his paralysis. Was sad to see him go through the stages of denial (happiness), to anger, to completely loosing his mind, to his changing as a person.

Hands down the most disturbing movie I have ever seen.

Pi is a movie that doesn't have explicit scenes or anything, but is really hard to watch and makes you pretty uncomfortable.

Ah damn, I was hoping you were smart and asking for a list of movies that challenged you to think while watching. You are just looking for movies that are so disturbing/depressing you want to quit watching. lame....

Blindness.

Irreversible is great, but pointless to watch at home, has to be seen in a theatre.

I watched In The Bedroom a few months ago. It has some great actors in it but has a tough storyline.
In a nutshell a couple's sun who is 18 and is poised to go to college to be an architect gets into a summer fling with an older woman who has a kid (Marisa Tomei looking very hot) His parents are worried he will fall for her and skip college to be with her and throw away his future.

One afternoon her Ex (a violent jackass) shows up and is about to attack her. The younger guy jumps in, there is a struggle and a gun and the younger guy is killed. The Ex (the killer) has a very wealthy dad and many people assume he will get off in the trial. The parents of the now dead son have to live with losing their sun and the reality that this guy may get off. The father contemplates vengeance of his own as this happens.

It is not a happy movie, but it is very good.

I would also add Shindler's List. It is amazing and brilliant, but it is sad and rough to watch. It is not a movie you watch for the sheer enjoyment of a movie.

"I Am Sam"

It's about a retarded guy who's fighting for custody of his child. I've started to watch this movie a million times, never finished it. To heartbreaking for me.

I agree. I think, for me at least, the easiest of those three is Last King of Scotland. It is rough, but it is presented in a way that it is almost a thriller of sorts. The other two have a lot of things to make you pretty damned depressed about.

Shindler's List was tough, but at least there was some humanity in it.

Toughest ever for me was Sophies Choice, watched it once, was devistated by it, and will never lay eyes on that film for the rest of my life.
