What's his motivation for this? His wife found another partner online? So he is trying to make revenge or what?

his motivation is he and his investors had spent $5M over the last like 9 years in trying to get this thing through.. they are seeing this to be a huge money maker.

imagine $75 per domain x 500,000 adult domains = $37,500,000 PER YEAR in registration fees...

so the motivation is easy to understand..its the profit margin.

i have no doubt that this will get approved.. and that's when the nightmare begins for domain owners who do want to get the domain, to deal with cybersquatters, etc... and who knows if congress will get involved.. the talk of a "porn tax" for California seems like an easy place to squeeze money.. since mainstream sees the adult as being this multi-billion dollar bucket, ripe to be taxed like all the other "sins".

For those read-challenged and not reading all of the xbiz article, the last paragraph is my quote as a look into the crystal ball:

?After .XXX gets approved, I wouldn't be surprised that .sex comes up since XXX refers to hardcore porn,? Shalton said. ?And many porn sites may not want to be in that grouping, so some entity will most likely submit their application in for .sex or gay. or .whatever.?

.xxx is just a tld that some company (registrar) will own the registration rights to - where you will have to register .xxx through them or through a registrar that works with them. people can never seem to get their mind around the fact that its an investment and his arguments about all adult stuff going on .xxx are simply whats required to get ICAAN to take a serious look at the application.

.xxx has zero to with anything else. not with the US government. not with pending legislation... not with anything.

ICAAN is now preparing to review applications and approve all kinds of TLD's and has basically opened the system up where they are accepting proposals and upfront application fees for ANY tld (not sure if they decided a final number on this yet.. but their suggestions have ranged from "well, thats not too bad" to "oh my fucking god.. what are they basing that on")

so, your paranoia about .xxx is quite misplaced. the system that existed when this was initially proposed has now been replaced entirely with something new and different that is intended to make all kinds of retarded tld's happen.

being worried that .xxx will or won't go through is pretty retarded since ICAAN has changed the process for approving new TLD's completely to allow for this exact thing. Your problem isn't some guy or some registrar anymore.

with the rules being changed to make it easier to get a TLD, all that someone needs is $50k-$100K for the application, all of the requirements completed, and then stand in line for the process.

ICANN pushed hard to "open up the name space", by creating more TLDs. Its easy to jump to the conclusion that they are doing this for the money, since they will get a piece of every new domain, as well as rate hikes on existing.. but what will they do with all of this money as they are a quasi-government entity...

Maybe congress should look at the estimated projections for revenue on new TLD, and maybe see that as a new source of money to help bail the country out.

I see the new TLDs as being just like lottery tickets... voluntary taxes

let me get what originally happened correct:

icm registry had a scheme to offer the registration of .xxx domains and make a margin.

Nearly everyone in the industry came out against this, with the exception of Lensman and a few others, Joan from ASACP writes a letter to icann saying that the industryin whole was in favor of it and they would know because they are very tuned-in to the adult online industry, which started an uproar

it then came out that helmy from xbiz was behind much of the deal, as he had some agreement to get a % of the .xxx proceeds

now its a known fact that xbiz is behind ASACP, and i recall reading somewhere on here that xbiz is behind some, or all, of all of the stuff you do brandon, so i found your comment interesting

let's follow your insinuation.....

starting with some facts:

- alec helmy is the founder of xbiz
- alec helmy is the founder of ASACP
- i was the volunteer CTO for ASACP for 3 years
- alec/xbiz/asacp isn't behind anything that i am doing.

so..given what i think you are trying to say, then wouldn't you think that if Alec was the puppetmaster, that I wouldn't have been as vocal and as much on the frontline of fighting against .XXX?

You should be looking around at those that weren't vocal against .XXX that's the more interesting "comment"

Your logic is clearly lacking the facts and clearly not knowing who I am and what I have done.

.xxx being granted as an extension is just another headache, not the aids virus.

the gov would have to enforce a internet ghetto via mandating isp's stop resolving .com porn sites and only .xxx ones in the usa. think that will ever happen?

google and other SEs would have to give them special consideration in the algorithms and i don't see that happening. they don't like to be told what to do.

many other problems exist for this extension. doesn't mean i still don't want to jam a rusty spike in his eye.

pure speculation at this point as nobody has offered up solid proof yet, but it is on the record that ICMR tried this tactic with the FSC

how about the trademark issue? for example, if you own a1rek.com, you would then have to register a1rek.xxx and pay the renewal fee on that and your other .com domains as a matter of business, or risk somebody else registering it for online adult

yah thats fucked up too. and if i don't pursue the fucker who owns the .xxx and they use it and try to establish trademark, i lose mine potentially. its extortion pretty much depending on how you look at it. many brokers will buy up all the names and then try to sell them to the owners or highest bidders at ridiculous pricing depending on the brand power of the domain.

its gonna be ugly.

there is so much that doesn't make sense.. so many(alleged) backroom deals for traffic, for (alleged) positioning on premium domains, etc.

all of the past doesn't matter as much as going forward. We stopped .XXX and it was a big collective "WE" that did it (i must have missed seeing your name posting against .XXX on ICANN"s two public postings boards and must have missed your name being listed on my now defunct FighttheDotXXX.com website, or must have missed your name being on the petition list that I sent to ICANN of adult companies and individuals taking a stand against .XXX)

... but we aren't able to stop .XXX now because of the dropping of the "sponsored" part..

If you read through the testimony supplied by ICM by their "experts", they still contend they did have the large community support.

i was going to drop this until you posted that shit.

from reading your posts, its clear that you were part of the entity that was pushing for the adoption of .xxx, so tell me who are you to question what i have done about .xxx? other than lets forget what happened in the past

i had read icann was putting off the new tld off for oone year because they are getting lots of push back. .xxx happens i figure its just a matter of time governments start making it manditory. I think thats their main goal then they can charge $500 a domain. as a industry we are easy to pick off no unity. everyone has their little short term agendas thinking they are masters of the universe not thinking of future.its sad

you clearly are misunderstanding what you have read, and what the facts are.

i can absolutely question you on what you have done about .xxx as you were the first to point your finger at me.

you still think i am a part of supporting .XXX - the lurkers in this thread are laffing at you.

is this about me or is this about .xxx ?

no matter the answer, its irrelevant, there is nothing we can do to stop .XXX now. its up to the arbitration to determine the ruling, and there is no outside public comment period as there was twice before with .XXX that did help to sway ICANN.
