Not all dentists accept all dental plans, so before committing to a policy you'll want to check that a dentist in your area will accept it.

I got some coverage here: http://www.dentalplans.com/ before getting some work done. I was pleased when the receptionist asked where I got the policy because she said it covered more than most that she had seen - it was either Aetna or Cigna.

Discount dental plan is the way to go if you have immediate needs. Actually with the right insurance company you can use both the discount dental and then bill the insurance co to save even more. What people don't realize is health providers (dentists included) increase their price by at least 2x to compensate for when the insurance company comes to negotiate a lower price on their bill. So if you take the discount dental card and cash you'll generally end up paying 50% less. I paid less out of pocket for ceramic crowns with a discount dental card than my uncle did with his government insurance plan.

It really depends on what you need done. Like any business each one is going to give teaser rates on various services to get you to buy from them over the other co. Do the compare all plans on that link and find the one with the least yearly cost and best discount for whatever procedure. You'll also need to make sure your dentist takes that particular card it's been awhile since I've used dentalplans but I'm pretty sure they have what providers accept it as well.

it really depends on what you want, think you will need.

Ive had a ton of plans over the years, some that had $0 copay for visits but didn't cover shit in terms of work, then others that had a $50 copay and covered full.

My last visit I had to get a crown. The way my dental insurance read, they covered 60% of everything then 80% after I spent $1000 up to an additional $1000. However, in their fine print, they classified what they deemed necessary work and getting a crown was "not necessary." They stopped responding to my letters and calls and I am out over $900.

So if you are the kind of guy that has to get a lot of cavities filled or work done, get insurance around that, versus if not, then just go for the low office visit.

Most if not all of your regular dental insurance plans will have waiting periods before you can get any major work done. So if you decide to go that route be sure to check out the waiting period for whatever procedure.

yeah in that case you get the discount plan until the insurance kicks in.
