Need good "concealed to carry" weapon....any suggestions?

I'm checking SA pistols.

Leaning towards Glock or Beretta...

Needs to be easy to conceal in public so 44 magnum revolvers like Dirty Harry are out.

Links to images or sites for more information will be appreciated so show me your good, bad & ugly......

Thanks,

I have several Glocks and they are awesome. Very reliable and feel good to handle. I am actually thinking about picking up a Sig as well.

The only advice I can offer is to try and find a shooting range that allows you to try different weapons. If, you can't find one of those, then I suggest at least handling as many as possible at a gun show to find out what fits best in your hand. Only you can say which one is best, Live Dose says the Glocks are great. Personally, I think they suck for me, but I know they are great weapons. I like the Sig 229 and the Springfield XD, more so the Springfield. I like the quick recovery from the recoil and it fits better in my hand and has a very smooth trigger pull.

I have the Kimber Eclipse II and love it. It's a 45 compact, but a little heavy. I love mine.

People have already mentioned the first guns I would have. That being said, nobody has mentioned Kahr. They have some great compact models which are perfect for carry.

http://www.kahr.com/

If you do decide on a 9mm and this weapon is specifically for conceal carry / self defense....Be sure to pick up Cor-Bon 9mm 115 grain +P Jacketed Hollowpoint rounds. They are THE MOST POWERFUL 9mm rounds available. ALWAYS use JHP's while carrying but use standard ball ammo for practice.

Size comparison
Walther PPS vs. XD vs. Glock

I think the Kahr subcompacts are even smaller too.

I've got the 9mm/.41AE standard version (black, all metal) of this but when I get my CHP I'll be getting the compact .40 in polymer.

When soldiers of the US military were polled as to their favorite weapon - it wasn't an assault rifle, it was their Beretta. Great pistol.

Thats funny...

Most soldiers that get issued a rifle, are not issued a pistol.

OK for starters unless you are a very experienced shooter I wouldn't even go with an automatic, most of the people here are obviously not very experienced.

The problem with an auto is do you carry it racked and ready or do you wait to rack the slide until you need it? If you carry it racked and ready you are more likely to shoot yourself unless you have trained yourself extensively with the weapon beforehand.

All in all youare better with a reveolver for concealed carry, something like the 5 shot Taurus .38 Special is an outstanding choice.

You also have the added psychological bonus that your adversary can see the hollow point bullets staring at him.

I have both a Walther seni auto and a Taurus revolver and for concealed I do prefer the Taurus revolver

Umm this doesn't make sense. What's the difference between an auto with one in the chamber but the hammer not cocked and a revolver? With my SIG I don't have to keep the hammer cocked, there's a decock mechanism right on the handle.

Theres no difference, unless its an auto (like a glock) that doesnt have a hammer or decock function.

This is why I say, carry an HK... but thats just my personal preference.

HK's are great... although I have the leo variant on my hk usp I hate the de-cocking on the side it gets in the way all the time... plus leo variant give me a better and lighter trigger pull... I like my trigger pull at 3-5lbs another good thing about HK usp is they are da or sa from factory

and no semi auto will accidently go off.. your best safety is your finger bottom line... every gun I got are ready to rock with 1 trigger pull...

I agree.

You get a 9mm pistol in the same exact size and have 65% more stopping power.

My favorite is still a .45, although I'm really starting to like my FN FiveseveN. I mean if I had one. I may or may not.

Having been trained on several weapons, the Glock wins for me everytime, hands down.
Reliable, has not once jammed on me, feels good in your hand, recoil is low and the trigger safety is a gem.

You guys all want to look like you're in the movies.

The best carry weapon for regular people is the old fashioned revolver.

People think when they get in a gunfight they are gonna be cool and in control, but in fact you act like a total goof. Just watch security camera footage of actual CQC gunfights...you can pretty much assume you will act the same way although in your mind you think you will act like Jack Bauer because you squeeze off a few rounds at the shooting range once a month.

You need a simple gun if you plan on getting in spur of the moment face-to-face shoot outs. Not to mention, the old fashion way of holding a pistol is better as well. With it down low and your elbow bent. You can make much quicker movements with it like that. Pistol training at arms length is good for target shooting but not good for gunfights.

If I were to ever buy a handgun, this would be my baby

Edit: For easy concealment you might prefer the SP101 or even an LCR. I just got a boner for the .357 myself.

Lets go shoot sometime.. I got a fiveseven last year have not shot it enough for ccw yet.. I like to carry something I've put 5000 rounds through (hk and xd) but I'd like to start packing this little armor piercing piece on princapal alone haha... I carry all .40 our team capt is all about the 45 he will hear nothing else it's funny.. ( he is 25 year navy seal)

If you do decide on a 9mm and this weapon is specifically for conceal carry / self defense....Be sure to pick up Cor-Bon 9mm 115 grain +P Jacketed Hollowpoint rounds. They are THE MOST POWERFUL 9mm rounds available. ALWAYS use JHP's while carrying but use standard ball ammo for practice.
the cor-bon's are fantastic. i have those for both my 9mm and .45. the last time i went to the range with one of my friends i loaded a cor-bon in the magazine then stuck a bunch of normal target rounds on top, asked him if he could tell the difference when he got to it.

damn near everyone at the range could.

pop -pop - pop- BOOM.

they're definitely a potent little round.

the kahrs are real nice guns as well. excellent for carrying because even full loaded they don't weigh all that much. no hammers or other odd protrusions to catch on clothing while drawing. my only real complaint about them is the length of the grip. my hands are big enough that my pinky hangs just a little bit off the end of the grip. not a deal breaker, but it annoys me a little bit, other than that i'm a big fan of those guns.

i prefer my kimber ultra carry II for concealment, it's a little bulky and heavy compared to other choices, but i absolutely love the way that gun shoots and i am more accurate with it than most other guns i have shot. it's also weighted very nicely so that even as the magazine empties it retains its balance nicely.

Just a note of thanks for the many excellent suggestions.

I have a great shopping list now.

Thanks again.
