:mad "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting" WTF?

So yesterday evening I start getting these popups like crazy on my Vista box. WTF is this shit? My windows is legit, it came with the machine when I purchased it from staples. I'm assuming someone with a key generator happened to register their Vista with the same serial number? Fuckers, now my windows won't auto update...

A few times some big companies like staples / best buy etc etc had systems with faulty Windows on them.

Very, very unlikely thats the case, but it's happened.

Microsoft is not very smart .. they do some time mark legit windows as pirated. I have heard people complaining.

If it's the OS and not a virus or something, Staples or the manufacturer owes you a new key. How long ago did you get this machine from them?

No, I'm not a total noob. It's not malware of that type. It's a genuine windows error box I am seeing. I've had the computer for a little over a year now. I get a popup saying that i may be the victim of software counterfeiting, click here for more info, yadda yadda, and i go straight to the microsoft genuine software validation page at http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/. When I attempt to validate windows, my validation fails and it tells me I won't be able to take advantage of certain windows features like auto updates.

The only software I've installed recently is the 60-day trial for Microsoft Office from the Microsoft downloads site. I'm looking into the possibility that it could be a software incompatibility issue somewhere, but I just can't see it. Anything I suspect even a little to be a possible security threat I run in a virtual machine on my Linux box.

That's what lead me to wonder if someone running a cracked version of Vista elsewhere is possibly using the same serial number.

Lol I used to work at a national PC superstore here in the UK and the staff all used to "borrow" license keys from new machines.

When manufacturers allow retailers to provide warranty support for their hardware and re-seal boxes as new, this is what you get

I had that too and ours is also totally legit. We couldn't get around it and that is why I was 'forced' to move to another valid and paid for copy of Vista that we owned.

There is a phone number you can call. Automated service, that let's you enter your license codes and then gives you a new license. I've had to do this a few times. Pretty simple, but tiresome.

Maybe try a system restore to a previous date before you noticed this? I would also contact their customer service...probabley in India.

Yup I've only had to ever call once, and they actually took care of me, and it only took one phone call. Had an activation issue also. Took less than 20 mins to get it all handled.
