I've had crazy problems with my HP laptop. Luckily if it's within the 1 year warranty they fix it no questions asked. After that you're fucked though.

It's called an extended warranty + accidental damage coverage

pretty much essential for any notebook you'll be moving around

Can you post a link from the website? I saw a few good nice ones, they have the high specs I want but I want it to be slim, light and powerful.

I've had both dell and hp laptops and liked them all. Get the model that best suits your needs and budget and don't worry so much about which manufacture made it - they are both great companies.

Dell would be just slightly better the HP I guess. Except for Dell's silly freight charges.
A Dell XPS is good or a HP pavilion (I have the HP and my GF has the XPS).

If you need really small laptops I would say Sony Vaio VGX-Tx series (when you are on the road a lot) or a simple Asus Eee PC if it's only for holidays to check email and news.

Highest grade would be the Dell M6400 with 16GB of Ram and a 1T drive

http://www.dell.com/content/products...=04&l=en&s=bsd

But that would set you back 4K to 5K atleast

I am happy with my Dell M6300 but I wouldn't exactly call it light.

I have never had luck with HPs but its been several years since I owned one.

Every HP laptop I owned had the same problem.... the connection between the battery charger and battery wouldnt let the battery charge and it required sending it back in to fix. 3 different laptops. Never had a dell problem.

If you do decide to get a ThinkPad, go through their stock shareholder program. You will save up to 38% on a notebook and accessories. They don?t verify that information and it?s yours for the using.

The lightest ThinkPad is the X Series which starts at 2.9 lbs.

Not really, even with extended coverages, accidentals etc etc you will still be without the laptop about 1 week should anything happen to it.
No laptop = no data = no work

I always buy cheaper and fast replaceable laptops, keeping a mirrored copy of my harddisk at home so I can at any time plug it into a new laptop and still have all my data and have the laptop up and running within the time it takes to copy your data

The dell I bought like 4 or 5 years ago I hated cause the cpu was way to fast for the size (15" non wide) like a 2.6GHZ and the laptop would get so hot it would overheat and lag. If you remembered to prop it up so fresh air was always flowing under it then it would be ok but whats the point of having a laptop if you can never sit it on your lap..

I've had this 17" Gateway for a little over 2 years and it's been great and can do 100% of the things I would need a full pc to do..

I'll be shopping for a new one soon though cause it's better to replace laptops and PCs while they are still running good rather than after they die along with that one file or large project you were working on didn't get backed up

I've bought 3 HP and never any serious issues, great machine and the Dell's don't come close in the same price range when it comes to performance ($1100-$2000)

the nice thing about the HP's is they have many input ports that the other manufacturers tend to leave out, and the laptop's with dedicated graphic cards are usually set up with much better overall horsepower than the others in the same price

this machine is sweet, was looking pretty seriously of getting one but I think I am going to hold off for Win7 to come out:

And crapple is crapple. What a pointless fucking statement.

Although I'm a desktop guy, I bought my daughter a Dell 1735 for college and got my mom a 1525 for facebook, emails and pogo. When I've had occasion to use them I prefer the 1735 for the larger screen and numeric keypad, but I have no problem with either one.

They're fine toys, and they're reasonably priced.

I would NEVER buy a Dell.
When I was in university a few years back, they had some kind of insane student deal on Dell laptops....

I remember...EVERY single person I knew who had one complained of some kind of huge problem, and most had to send them to the company for major repairs

I remember that and I will never, ever ever give them one penny
