I had my dog doing his business outside within a week of getting him. I remember the first time he went to the back door and yelped to get out. I was so proud of him I gave him almost an entire packet of biscuits. For 2 weeks after it he would get a treat everytime he done it so he realised he had to do it out there.

He is a Golden Lab tho and they say they are the easiest dogs to train.

Well Zango was great, she only went a handful of times in the house. The day she came home from the vet after being fixed she had 3 accidents but I'm sure the surgery had alot to do with them. The was a year ago on tax day April 15th LOL, the only reason I know the date.

YA, but just follow these simple rules..

1. Make sure they go out at least once a hour.
2. 30 Minutes after eating/drinking
3. Always take them to the same spot to go.
4. Make a BIG deal out of them going.

Follow this and it's done in no time, days usually.

yep, that's the way to do it... we're looking after my parents two shelties while they're back in canada and scotland for the summer - we did the same thing to get them used to going where we wanted them to go at the side of the house

Crate training is another easy way to train the dog to go to the washroom. I believe in crate training all dogs because when it's done properly, they come to think of their crate as their safe place and are happy to be in it. This is especially handy for vet trips and the like.

Having to do cage training with the newest puppy, but he is a peek a pom, and they are stubborn. Finally he is starting to get it, and have got him off chewing things up, and off of the barking via a bark collar. Potty training has been the hardest with him. Working on it though. Little better everyday. Hate doing cage training, had no choice with this guy.

If you happen to have a treadmill in the house they're awesome at burning off energy even in a dog.

Yea it can be a bit of a wake up call if its been a while. I have a new Rott pup coming in mid May. Its been a good 3 years since I had to house break a dog. The good news is the weather is nice. Nothing worst then house breaking a pup during a Buffalo winter.

here is a little trick for crate training, always feed your dog in their crate with the door closed.

Soon your dog will run into their crate when they know its feeding time.

this also helps with potty training as they will try hard not to mess in their crates. just make sure to take them out right after you let them out.

it doesn't take very long for them to associate joy of eating and their crate as a fun safe place.

Your dog will love their crate (and usually sleep in it putting themselves to bed i it) after 6 months of this.

Thank god I have a crate. I just try hard to get her out, on a good note she has gone right by the door on tile.

My dog does exactly what he is told. I tell him to jump in the bath and he does it - reluctantly but he does it. The one thing he just won't do is go on the treadmill. I've tried tons of times and he just won't go on lol

Any suggestions?

30 minutes?? more like 30 seconds.

and you still have to let them out all the time if they are indoor dogs, til they learn how to let you know they need out...

It's very hard at first but they usually start choosing their favorite spot. You line it with newspapers and then slowly move the newspaper to the spot where you want them to take care of business. Despite the patience it takes to housebreak a puppy, the puppy is well worth it. Talk about the love and loyalty it gives...for life!

Oh come on, it is not that hard, you just need patience. Lots of it! Shouldn't take more than a week..
