When are Google and other SE's going to figure out how to crawl Ajax'd content?

I think they are literally slowing the internet down at this moment. So many things could be loaded in ajax and browsed many times faster, but people still design static type pages that search engines can index.

For example: when you view a "Top 10 Most X Things" page and you have to actually reload the page each time just to view the next picture and paragraph. And then once you're done you have to hit the browsers back button like 11 times to get back to where you came from, most of the time hitting it too many times trying to rush yourself. When you could have just spent a 1/4 of that time brushing through the content, hitting the back button once, and getting the fuck on with life.[/rant]

Agreed - hopefully they'll realize it's time to recognize it and treat it like the rest. Ajax is cool.

You could write one...of course the hardest thing would be marketing it and making it popular.

Well first of all there would need to be some kind of standard set for the Ajax functions, like a specific command or attribute that would tell browsers and search engines that other content exists within it, like <a ajax=true> or <a onclick="Ajax()">. Then it's up to search engines to figure out how to load it. Trust me it won't be years before this is accomplished... I hope.

What browser do you use? On mine, there's a small arrow just below the "back" button, which shows the titles of the last 10 or so pages. You're back at the first page in 2 clicks.

Yeah, why doesn't Blizzard just release Diablo 3 NOW, because I want to play it NOW. Don't mind the fact that it won't be ready and that I will bitch for months at how buggy it is and how much the devs suck, even though I have no fucking clue what really goes on in mixing up various emerging technologies that have to render on a multitude of systems, browsers, etc. I just know I want it and I know I can whine when I want to.. </end sarcasm>

Google's idea in the past was to not design a website for the search engine but for humans and the search engine has to be able to handle it. But in reality, it's another story... I think all innovative pioneers at Google are gone meanwhile.

will be very surprised to see if that happens any time soon

with ajax you can have only one entrance to your site - yourdomain.com and that's it - everything else could be ajax driven. what ajax makes possible is to turn a "static" webpage in to fully driven and dynamic application. there could be hundreds of things going on in the background - loading, reloading, updating - going both ways.
It won't happen anytime soon as current SE's index only static data - it is impossible for them keep track and index everything that can be changed dynamically on the fly

lets say someone creates ajax version of Photoshop - how and what is SE's bot should be able to index then? it certainly with try and "click" all possible options in such application - will it get busy in an endless loop of its visual creations?)))

just like in programming there is a separation of business logic and presentation layers same approach will be used in conjunction with SE's and Ajax - separate your search-able content (presentation layer) and application functionality (business logic)

Why do dumbass webmasters not make their sites degradable?

Really, it's not up to them to worry about your ajax. If you want your stuff crawled, don't ajax the crap out of it.
AJAX has it's uses and SEO is not one of them. At least not the content that's retrieved.
