But this week he expanded his campaign into Sydney with a new poster crudely defacing the church's purest figure, drawing complaints from the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney.

"It takes a pretty sick mind to come up with something like that just to get publicity," spokeswoman Katrina Lee said.

"It's concerning that people are prepared to go down that track ... it's a sad indictment of them."

Sisely said he chose the Virgin Mary for the poster because, to him, religion constituted fiction.

"For me believing in God is like believing in James Bond," he said.

"It's just like fiction and I hate fictional narratives … I don't know any young people who believe in God.

"Anyone can make fiction but if you're filming documentaries, you're transforming people's lives."

Sisely said one person who identified themselves as belonging to a church phoned his production company threatening legal action earlier this week but left no further details.

He has also received numerous e-mail complaints.

But Sisely maintained there had been a strong response from people wanting to attend the auditions, which begin tomorrow.

He estimated about 50 potential Sydney applicants had got in touch this week, adding to around 300 people who earlier expressed interest in Melbourne.

He said the Victorian search had turned up a few possible candidates, including a "smart and beautiful" female medical student.
