alrighty, bet you guys thought i forgot about this... took a bit longer than i expected but i've got something to show you all now:

watermarks are not embedded into the code but rather placed into random video frames

the video can be cropped, downgraded, modified and the watermarks (at least some of them) will still be recognizable by our software - if the video quality is extremely poor then the watermarks will no longer be recognizable, but the video will also be trash at that point as well

any string you want to add to the video is possible ON THE FLY, this can be a hash of any type, a database record id, whatever you want it will happen AUTOMATICALLY once installed

NO RE-ENCODING IS NECESSARY EVER

the overhead on the server is extremely low, nothing is re-encoded

keep in mind, this is a rough prototype / "proof of concept" example, many things can and will be improved such as:

1. intelligent frame selection of the watermark into "busy" areas so that they remain hardly visible to the naked eye, currently some of the watermark placement is visible (see terminator trailer ending sequence for good example) - this is not a big deal, the code for this intelligent selection is almost ready

2. randomly sized watermarks, randomly placed

3. support for remaining codecs and containers (not hard at all, we just focused on a single codec / container right now).

* it can also support other types of proprietary streaming media services (plug-in feeds, vod, etc)

the hardest part is over, the rest is nicely packing it up and deploying it... this can be done on proprietary hardware or via software installed on the end users server

before i proceed much further with this, i'm looking to speak with people that are interested in financing this, marketing it, and moving forward as partners

i'm a conceptual guy, i enjoy taking ideas and making them happen... now i need a group or person on the networking/marketing side of things

one more thing related to the intelligent frame selection for watermark placement, the luminance of the watermarks can stand out on certain frames (as i know many detectives here will notice)

we're working the luminance used when superimposing the watermark - some frames without much color might look awkward with a vibrant watermark, we have a solution and it is being worked on

No, right now only mov... adding other codecs and containers is not that hard and will happen shortly... this is just a prototype

seems that this is a huge issue on the boards, yet when potential solutions come to light (yours and potentially mine) no one really cares

doesn't anyone want to know who is stealing their content? want an easy way to brand something with a 2257 record id? want to combat fraud by proving a video released on the internet was downloaded by a member that charged back? want to hold someone legally responsible for sharing your content?

it will be great for producers too

lets say for example you produce a semi-exclusive set of content and let around 5 to 10 webmasters buy it and use it with certain restrictions

a while later, this content is everywhere... and you can't point a finger at anyone

if you let a webmaster download your content, a few hidden watermarks would be added to their version of the video - linking them to it (you would have to do nothing out of the ordinary other than upload the video to your server as you would any other day)



you grab the floating version, cross reference it and find out who is responsible

voila!

Looks promising, especially if this thing can watermark encrypted flash videos streams too. It'll not solve all piracy problems, but having yet another line of trenches in your defence system is always good.

If this product ever becomes commercially available I think we'll give it a try.

you aren't supposed to see them (but they are visible in some frames more than others)

they're supposed to be hidden tags you can retrieve if you need to with any information you want (ie, members username that downloaded it, etc)
