I didn't see anything there that hasn't been filmed many times before except the HD part as it's relatively new. I've shot surfing stills from the water and the point I'd like to make is the pure athleticism that it takes for the photographer to get in position to film stuff like that.
I'm sure most of you have played in the shore break down at the beach and had fun as you tried to stand in one place as the little waves slapped you back. Now try to imagine swimming out into twelve foot barreling waves over a shallow coral reef with all that water moving around. To get the shot you have to be in the PERFECT position. You have to be in the right spot to catch the surfer coming towards you. You have to be in the right spot to be able to pass through the wave without losing your position. A little too close in and the wave will crash down on you or pull you up and over into the coral reef. If you're too far out you'll miss the surfer coming by. While a surfer can easily just paddle over a wave, a photographer must swim while carrying his equipment and it takes much more effort when having to deal with so much moving water. When someone looks at a video like this I think the really amazing part, the skill and effort of the photographer gets lost. The same goes for something like the " Planet earth " series. Just try and imagine what a photographer had to do to get those shots ![]() |
