Don't hit any large mammals [elk, etc], it sucks. Yukon highways are decent, same with BC. That will get you there from US border to border.
A lot of people ride bikes so the roads are workable but there can be long gravel construction sections with waits. [1 way traffic]

Ah the AlCan. I drove from Connecticut to Alaska (Anchorage) and from Alaska (Anchorage) to Illinois.
I'm not sure what shape it's in because I drove it in the early 90's. In any case, you'll be fine until you get to the Yukon Territory. Once there you'll find that "crush" is used on the roads. Basically crushed up rocks. It can be hell on tires so make sure you have a good, FULL SIZE, spare. Campers and RVs. Be prepared for 1000?s of RVs to be in your way. 20 in a row on a non-paved section of road, kicking up huge clouds of dust. Yum! Bring warm clothing and rain gear. It's fucking Alaska. Summer or not, it gets cold. Bring lots of mosquito repellant. They don?t call them the State bird for nuthin?. No 5, 4, 3, 2, or even 1 star hotels. Plenty of places to camp and the roadside inns can be nice. Go for it, have fun. It?s not as bad as most people think it is. Just keep in mind that it?s Northern Canada and Alaska and prepare as such. I?m very curious as to how much it has changed and improved. |

Do you not appreciate the beauty of the wild and adventure? I have an old school friend that owns a commercial fishing boat in Alaska. We have not seen one another in about forty years though we have been in contact throughout the years. He has been inviting me to come up so I am giving serious thought to doing so. Even though I do not travel well...because of my injuries...I am considering driving up instead of flying just to enjoy the wilderness.

I don't know personally, but I did work with a guy for a lot of years that took his motorcycle up the Alaska hwy every year during his vacation. I once asked him why and his answer was "It's a great ride".
Tons of pics of it on the web. Look here.

I think it would be a great adventure, I watched this show called "Departures" a couple of weeks ago and they did the entire drive just as you described in a RV. Looked like a lot of fun!

Alaska is beautiful, weird that on a forum like gfy, full of tree hugging obama lovers retards, no one would be interested to see nature at its finest?
But then again, what do you expect from caviar liberal hypocrites? |

Don't worry about speed limits, just watch for Moose. Figure 350-450 miles per 8 hours driven. Maybe less depending on traffic.

I've done about six round trips, to the point that I was getting bored with the scenery, which takes some doing. Now I prefer to ride the Alaska State Ferry from Bellingham Washington to Whittier in Alaska.
Fastest I ever did was Fairbanks to Massachussetts in five and a half days, but I basically never got out of the car except to pee. A more normal trip is five or six days from the state of Washington (or Montana, if you prefer to drive through Alberta instead of BC) to the the Alaskan border. If you're really curious, go on Amazon.com and buy a publication called The Milepost, which gives you all the route information you could hope for including mile-by-mile information (updated yearly) on services, camping, points of interest, road conditions, and every other obsessive detail that 80-year-olds in $300,000 Winnebagos want to know before they hit the road. |

This is truth. Speed limits aren't the limiting factor because there's very little enforcement. In an average trip you'll see maybe two Mounties in a week, and they'll be going past you at 90 miles per hour heading for a bloody wreck that's still an hour on up the road from you. What will slow you down is road construction combined with endless caravans of impossible-to-pass motor homes.
