Windows 7 will ship without IE in Europe

http://news.BBC.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8096701.stm

"the company said it would make it easy for users to get at and install the web browsing program"

LOL !! But I bet onceinstalled it'll still be as difficult to uninstall as it is today ...

How long do you think it will be before the average user comes across an application that requires IE (and all of its tentacles stuck into the OS) to function?

Microsoft should play a cruel joke on Europe. Don't pre-install any www browsers.

Instead, pre-install telnet with text instructions on how to download Mosaic world wide web browser.

I don't have a problem with them including their browser but you should easily and completely be able to remove it.

This is utterly fucking stupid. My laptop thankfully came with IE - so I could go online and install FF. Selling a computer or OS without an browser is like selling a car without tires, and then telling people that they can install their own tires at home.

I kind of doubt that Windows 7 will have Winsock 1 support. Perhaps, uh, Netscape 4.7. Or, OffByOne. That almost does HTML 3.2!

I don't know why Microsoft gets so much grief for including their web browser. It is their fucking OS, right?

The only time I've opened IE in the last 4 years was to use it download Firefox when I do a new build. The choice is there for any dumbass to make.

a good analysis of Microsoft's announcement can be found here

an excerpt from the end
Quote:
OEMs and those selling PCs will be alarmed at the potential impact on their business of not having IE on machines loaded with Windows - a fact cleverly hinted at in the opening of Heiner's blog. "Microsoft had sent a memo to computer manufacturers and retailers about our plans for Windows 7 in Europe. We're getting quite a few calls on this, so we thought it would be helpful to explain our plans," Heiner wrote.

Heiner did not say how IE would be delivered, but given you'd need a browser to get online in the first place the likelihood is IE will be delivered via Microsoft's Automatic Update service.

Regulators are right to maintain the pressure on Microsoft and competitors are justified in feeling shortchanged.

Based on Microsoft's sales figures for Windows XP N, the facts strongly suggest that OEMs, retailers, and customers will not be interested in Windows without IE and neither Microsoft or its partners will be interested in promoting this bastard operating system. Microsoft knows this and is betting it can offer a solution it knows will not only fail but that will keep browser competitors out of the mainstream Windows SKUs.

In offering an IE-free Windows, Microsoft clearly hopes it can preempt the legal outcome it fears - one of two options regulators have been discussing. Those options? Microsoft must either ship rival browsers with Windows or make them available for download from Automatic Update.

That would take competition against IE to a whole new level. No more Firefox slowly nibbling at the edges through downloads along with Opera or Chrome, but now presented on an equal basis out of the box as an alternative to IE.

The success of IE has been not just that it simplified the web browsing experience for many, but that it's easy for the ordinary user to find. They don't have to go to download sites. Making Opera, Firefox, or Chrome available in Windows or through Automatic Update would cede that advantage to rivals. ®

Does the EU make Apple take out Safari on Macs? Of course the answer is no. Why the hypocrisy?

A) As far as I know you've ALWAYS been able to remove IE form your computer.

B) If someone doesn't want to use IE then don't use it. Pretty simple.

C) I'm not sure this is seen as "more fair". So MS can't include IE with it's OS but the computer maufacturers can put any other browser on there they want. How is it fair that every other browser EXCEPT IE can be included? Talk about anti-competitive the EU is trying to manipulate the browser market by basically shutting out IE. If FF or the other browsers are so much better than IE then people will use them and download them. If the Euros can download movies of girls getting shit on and guys fucking horses then they can download FireFox, Opera, Chrome, Safari or whatever.

Maybe in the days of Windows 98, but it's a part of the system now. After some trojan issues I tried to remove it from my wife's XP comp and the only way is to fool around with manually deleting files and editing the registry. I chose to upgrade to a newer IE. (She doesn't actively use it but some programs occasionally open IE)

See above. Even though IE is not set as the default browser it is opened by some applications. There's also bits of IE functionality that show up in other parts of the OS... removing IE would probably break that...
