Looks like we can assume that only the very wealthy are going to be able to afford to use torrent and file sharing sites to "timeshift" their content.

I just saw that and was about to make a post about it. If I read the story correctly she had a trial in 2007 and was hit with 220K fine then the judge decided to order a new trial because he felt the jury was given incorrect instructions so this time they come back with a 1.9 million hit.

Pretty wild. The RIAA has won over 30,000 lawsuits but most of them are settled fast and don't make the news. A few like this and word will get around pretty quickly that they aren't messing around. Of course she will appeal and probably either have the verdict and amount tossed or greatly reduced, but it is still a pretty big deal.

In the state of Minnesota a civil judgment lasts for 10 years and can be renewed every ten years if the judgment hasn't been paid.

The record companies now have the power to garnish her wages, levy her bank accounts , seize excess assets (for example any extra cars, luxuries such as boats, etc.) until this $1.9 million is paid. They can take any protected assets in probate after she is dead. I've seen debt collector agencies do this to dead people over charged-off credit card debt, etc.

Most likely they will not utilize the powers of this judgment - the media and victory is what they wanted.

I hope time shifting some ACDC or whatever it was was worth it..

What I really want to know is where were all these guys who run these sharing sites and who encourage and enable people like this woman to behave the way she did and who are always arguing all over the internet that it is not illegal, and that they are just "timeshifting" and that everybody simply does not know anything about copyright and that fair use permits this type of use of the content.

On a silly note.....if they really feel this way....Why didn't some of these guys simply show up in court and let the judge know that she was acting within her rights? They could use the same arguments we always listen to here on GFY. Surely he would understand this. Right.......?

Okay tony404 let me set you straight:

Timeshift blah-blah-blah

VCR blah-blah-blah

Cloud blah-blah-blah

Seeding blah-blah-blah

Leaches blah-blah-blah

And you guys just don't understand this "new technology" and marketing strategy of stealing and then using that stolen content to monetize through dating, cams, and traffic brokers.

But let me explain it:

We tested this on canceled television shows blah-blah-blah

Branding bugs and watermarks blah-blah-blah

I haven't made a penny myself with this but my tests prove conclusively that none of you know what you are doing and I'm a marketing genius

There, that about covers it I think.

That is Gideons failed presentation to try to get on Dragons Den. Part of the big marketing strategy that nobody wants.
