Arturo Gatti, wrongly convicted of murdering himself by Brazil...
RIO DE JANEIRO -- Boxer Arturo Gatti's death was ruled a suicide by police Thursday and his wife, once suspected of killing the former champion, was released from jail.
Lead investigator Paulo Alberes told The Associated Press authorities decided Gatti killed himself on July 11 while at a seaside resort in northeastern Brazil. When asked if police had determined the case was a suicide, Alberes said "yes." He offered no other details, though a judge -- in ordering the release of Gatti's wife -- cited the police investigation and wrote that "the victim took his own life, committing suicide by hanging." The boxer's widow, 23-year-old Amanda Rodrigues, said in a phone interview as she walked out of jail she thinks Gatti may have killed himself because he was afraid she was going to leave him after the pair had a violent disagreement in public the night before his death. [+] EnlargeEd Mulholland/WireImage The death of Arturo Gatti, left, seen fighting Thomas Damgaard in 2006, has been ruled a suicide by Brazilian officials. "We had an argument in the street. Then he pushed me and I hurt myself. I believe that when we got home and he saw that he hurt me, he thought I would leave him, that I would tell him to just let me go, that I would separate from him," Rodrigues said. "He did that in a moment of weakness. He was drunk, maybe he didn't know what he was doing, maybe he thought I would leave him the next day." A day after the 37-year-old Gatti was found dead, police said that Rodrigues had strangled him with her purse strap as he drunkenly slept. But police began to back off the accusation about a week later after a coroner's report said Gatti may have killed himself as he was found "suspended and hanged." The autopsy report didn't exclude the possibility he was slain, but said he also could have died in an unexplained accident, or could have committed suicide. "The police investigation concluded that Arturo killed himself," said Celio Avelino, Rodrigues' attorney. "I've said before it would have been impossible for her to suspend and hang a man of that size." Judge Ildete Verissimo de Lima ordered the immediate release of Rodrigues after receiving the police report. The judge wrote that police informed the court "the detention of the suspect was no longer needed" as the investigation "excludes the possibility of murder." Rodrigues said her priority was to see the 10-month-old son she had with Gatti, grieve for her husband and clear her name in the case -- though some of Gatti's friends said they still suspect her. "All of my plans and dreams involved Arturo. I haven't been able to think of anything beyond that," she said. "My plan now is to stay with my son, my father, mom and sister, nothing more than this." Gatti's body was discovered in the apartment he was renting with Rodrigues in the resort town of Porto de Galinhas. The pair had arrived there a few days before for a second honeymoon. The couple brought their son, who was unhurt and is in the care of Rodrigues' family in Brazil. From the accounts of Gatti's family and friends, the two-year marriage with Rodrigues was tumultuous. "She was yelling all the time, they were always fighting and she'd say 'I'm going to kill you!' when they fought," Gatti's mother, Ida, said in a telephone interview from Montreal shortly after her son's death. According to records at the Court of Quebec's criminal and penal division, Gatti was charged on April 16 for violating a restraining order that had been filed against him. The records didn't indicate who filed the restraining order, but Gatti's mother confirmed that it was Rodrigues who had taken one out against him. She offered no other details. Rodrigues stressed her innocence and defended her relationship with Gatti. "There is no one who can doubt my love for Arturo or his for me. Arturo got married at 34 years of age, he was never married before, and this demonstrates the love that he had for me," Rodrigues said. "I was the only wife of Arturo and I want my good name back. Not only just for me, but out of respect for my husband and my son." Gatti, who captured two world titles in his 16-year pro career, retired in 2007 with a record of 40-9. Gatti's family and friends expressed disbelief that the boxer could have killed himself. "It doesn't make any sense," said Howard Grant, a friend and fellow boxer in adopted hometown of Montreal. Before a memorial Mass in northern New Jersey, where Gatti honed his craft, his brother said the family may try to have Arturo's body exhumed and have an autopsy conducted in Canada. Joseph Gatti, of Wyckoff, N.J., said Arturo's relatives are deeply disappointed with Brazilian authorities. Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press

Hopefully his family will go through with suing the cunt that killed their son. The cops and coronor would also be in the hot seat for shelving this as a simple suicide.

He was not a big guy at all and the early reports, I believe were that he was found not suspended but strangled with her purse strap. The chances of it looking like a murder from the get go and changed is highly unlikely. It's usually the other way around. People aren't professional killers and even hit men trying to make a murder appear as an accident or suicide would be detected with a thorough investigation.

He was extremely drunk. You have to go to the original, early reports to find the truth. The stories change and people start saying different things later because their initial accounts support a different conclusion. She was alone with the body for 10 hours which would have given her plenty of time to kill and stage the scene.

Gatti was not found hanging/suspended
Saturday, July 11th 2009, 5:04 PM
Stabley/AP According to reports, Arturo Gatti was found dead in Brazil on Saturday. Godleski/AP/AP In 2004, Gatti won a vacant WBC junior welterweight title by defeating Gianluca Branco. Bello/Getty/Getty Images Gatti was known as one of the sport's most exciting television fighters. Arturo Gatti, who trained at Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn and became a star on the Boardwalk in New Jersey while winning acclaim as one of the most compelling television fighters of the modern era for his rough-and-tumble style, was found dead Saturday in Brazil. Gatti, 37, was on his second honeymoon with his wife, Amanda, and their 10-month-old baby when his blood-spattered body was discovered in a seaside resort in Porto de Galinhas, according to media reports. A police investigation was ongoing and foul play is suspected. Gatti was found to have blood stains on the back of his head and neck around 6 a.m. Saturday morning, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Co. A police spokeswoman said "there were no bullet or stab wounds on his body, but police did find blood stains on the floor." His death comes on the heels of another boxing legend, Alexis Arguello, who won titles in three weight classes and died on July 1 from an allegedly self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest in Nicaragua. Gatti (40-9, 31 knockouts) was raised in Montreal, but became a star in Atlantic City, where he won his first title, at junior welterweight, by beating Tracy Harris Patterson in 1995, then went on to have some of his most memorable fights by the Boardwalk. He continued to live in Jersey City after retiring - his last fight was a seventh-round TKO at the hands of Alfonso Gomez on July 14, 2007, in Atlantic City. Gatti, nicknamed "Thunder," started his professional career in 1991 and won world championships in two different weight classes, at 130 pounds and 140 pounds. Gatti was best known for his three fights with Micky Ward in 2002 and 2003 - the first in Uncasville, Conn., the final two in Atlantic City. Both fighters were known for their all-action style and matching them together provided some of the most intense boxing action of the decade. Gatti won the series 2-1, all on brutal 10-round decisions, and the two fighters grew close outside the ring, often golfing together. "He was a great guy. He enjoyed life," Ward said when reached at his home in Lowell, Mass. "People don't understand how two guys who beat the heck out of each other could become friends, but that's what happened. He was the heart and soul of boxing. I'm going to miss him." Gatti was never quite the same after his battles with Ward - although he won his next two fights, to capture and retain the WBC junior welterweight title against Gianluca Branco and Leonard Dorin, he was TKO'd by Floyd Mayweather Jr. on June 25, 2005, and lost to Carlos Baldomir on a ninth-round TKO with the welterweight title on the line in 2006, his second-to-last fight.

http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/box...ory?id=4323934 (an early vid clip)
There is not one mention of his body body being suspended in this early article and the police ruled out an intruder or a suicide. RIO DE JANEIRO -- Police investigating the death of former boxing champion Arturo Gatti are working on the assumption his wife strangled him with her purse strap while he drunkenly slept. The woman's lawyer, however, insists she is innocent and was too "fragile" to kill a boxer. Lead investigator Moises Teixeira told The Associated Press on Monday nothing is being ruled out but he is certain the woman acted by herself. [+] EnlargeAP Photo/Clemilson Campos/JC Imagem Amanda Rodrigues, escorted by police after being arrested in Recife, Brazil, on Sunday, is the primary suspect in the death of her husband, Arturo Gatti. "It was technically impossible for a third person to have been in the flat," where Gatti was found dead early Saturday, Teixeira said. "The investigation isn't finished, but we continue to think she did this alone." Gatti's 23-year-old Brazilian wife, Amanda Rodrigues, told investigators she awoke Saturday about 6 a.m. to find her husband's body in the apartment they rented in Porto de Galinhas, a seaside resort in northeastern Pernambuco state. Rodrigues told police she had a fight with Gatti after dinner Friday night and he pushed her to the ground, resulting in minor injuries to her elbow and chin. Witnesses also reported to police the couple fought and that Gatti was drunk. Rodrigues told police the 37-year-old former junior welterweight champion then got into a cab with their son and returned to their rented apartment, leaving her alone downtown. Teixeira said witnesses told police Gatti left his son to sleep in the apartment, then returned to the city center to find his wife. She arrived at the apartment before he did and waited for him. They then both went upstairs together. Rodrigues told police she slept on the second floor of the apartment with her son, while Gatti slept on the first floor. She told police she awoke at 6 a.m. to feed her son and discovered her husband's body. Police say he most likely had been killed at least four hours before that. Teixeira said police do not think anyone else entered the apartment and killed Gatti -- he said there were no signs of forced entry and electronic locks indicated nobody else had entered the room aside from Rodrigues and Gatti. The investigator said Rodrigues told them she thought her husband had committed suicide or that someone had entered the apartment and killed him. Teixeira ruled out both scenarios. Rodrigues' sister, Flavia, told the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo there is "no way she could have strangled a man of that size." Rodrigues' attorney, Celio Avelino, told the AP he agreed with Flavia's conclusion and he would request Amanda be freed from jail Tuesday pending the conclusion of the investigation. "She is fragile, young and skinny -- how could she kill a boxing champion?" Avelino said. "When she awoke, she presumed he had committed suicide. But she had nothing to do with it." Flavia Rodrigues said her sister told her she thought Gatti had committed suicide -- though she said he knew of no reason the boxer would kill himself or why the pair fought the night before his death. "Sure, they had fights," Flavia said. "But he was crazy about her." The sister told Recife's TV Jornal news station that "Amanda told us she didn't kill Arturo, and we believe her." "My sister, like us, is very religious and would be incapable of killing anyone," Flavia said. "She found him already dead. It's up to the police to discover what happened in the flat." The pair married in 2007 and according to Rodrigues had a rocky relationship. Authorities were told the couple was extremely jealous of each other and that Gatti constantly complained about her clothing when she traveled to Brazil, police spokeswoman Milena Saraiva said. According to Brazilian law, police accuse a person of a crime but it is up to the prosecutor to formally file a charge. Teixeira said police have until July 22 to deliver their findings to the prosecutor's office, but he hoped the investigation would be completed before then. Rodrigues was accused of the crime Sunday and taken into police custody. She has been transferred to a woman's prison in the state capital Recife. She maintains her innocence. Gatti, Rodrigues and their 10-month-old son arrived in Brazil on Friday for what they told a local real estate agent was a second honeymoon. The baby, who was unhurt, is now with Rodrigues' family in Brazil. Gatti, a Canadian, fought an epic trilogy with Micky Ward that branded him one of the most exciting fighters of his generation. HBO said Monday it will re-air the three fights Friday and Saturday. Gatti retired in 2007 with a career record of 40-9 and 31 knockouts. Known for his straightforward punching and granitelike chin, Gatti captured the super featherweight title in 1995, when he defeated Tracy Harris Patterson at Madison Square Garden in New York. He won the junior welterweight title in 2004. At a news conference Monday announcing a super middleweight tournament at Madison Square Garden, there was a moment of silence in his honor. "I had the opportunity to represent Arturo when I worked for Main Events," promoter Gary Shaw told The Associated Press. "If there's anybody with a great personality and was a special type of person, it was Arturo Gatti." Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press

But police began to back off the accusation about a week later after a coroner’s report said Gatti may have killed himself since he was found “suspended and hanged.” The autopsy report didn’t exclude the possibility he was slain, but said he also could have died in an unexplained accident, or could have committed suicide.
According to this paragraph the manner of death would be undetermined which does not exclude homicide but the police made it a point to conclude suicide in spite of their own evidence that excluded suicide and supported homicide. ![]() ![]()

Exactly. It's one less homocide in the books. He should've married someone from Canada and not some tween from Brazil.
"She was yelling all the time, they were always fighting and she'd say 'I'm going to kill you!' when they fought," Gatti's mother, Ida, said in a telephone interview from Montreal shortly after her son's death.

Associated Press Writer AP Photo/Richard Drew Advertisement Boxing News Gatti exhumed; Canadian authorities to do autopsy Crowd remembers scrappy Gatti at NJ send-off Police hope video leads to Forrest's killers Former heavyweight champion Ibragimov retires Haye to fight Valuev for WBC belt on Nov. 7 Buy AP Photo Reprints Your Questions Answered Ask AP: Income taxes, states without budget woes Boxer Arturo Gatti's body was exhumed Friday to allow the Quebec coroner's office to perform a new autopsy at his family's request. The development comes a day after Brazilian police classified Gatti's death as a suicide. Until Thursday, police in the northeastern Brazil city of Recife considered it a homicide, with his wife as the prime suspect. Now, police say Gatti hanged himself with a handbag strap from a staircase column more than seven feet off the ground. Gilles Ethier, deputy chief coroner of the western part of the Province of Quebec, said Gatti's family had retained an American pathologist, who will assist with the autopsy Saturday morning at the Montreal morgue. "Clearly, it's necessary for us to pursue the investigation," Ethier said. "Of course, it's a little more complex for the pathologist because the body has been embalmed." Gatti's Montreal funeral was July 20. Many of his friends and family have expressed disbelief at the suicide ruling, and Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon said in a statement Friday that government officials will seek more information from Brazilian authorities on the Gatti investigation and its findings. Ellen Haley, a spokeswoman for Main Events, the longtime promoter of Gatti's bouts, said in a statement "we do not believe that he took his own life." She said members of the Gatti family, along with his boxing manager Pat Lynch, will carry out their own investigation. "We believe that once the results of that investigation are revealed, the truth will come to light and justice will be done," Haley said. Gatti's wife, 23-year-old Amanda Rodrigues, was released Thursday after being held since July 12 in Recife. She and Gatti arrived with their 10-month-old son a few days before in the resort town of Porto de Galinhas, where they rented a two-level apartment. Milena Saraiva, a Recife police spokeswoman, provided more information Friday about Gatti's death. Police ultimately concluded he hanged himself in the apartment early on July 11 from a wooden staircase column that was 7.3 feet off the ground. He stood on a stool and kicked it out from underneath him, police said. The autopsy report said Gatti was suspended for about three hours before his body fell to the floor. Rodrigues said she was sleeping with the couple's son in an upstairs bedroom. She told police she went downstairs about 6 a.m. to get milk for the boy, saw Gatti's body on the floor and assumed he was drunkenly sleeping. It was not until she went back downstairs at 9 a.m. that she discovered Gatti was dead and called police. Saraiva said no suicide note was found. "The first investigators to arrive at the scene only saw his body on the floor and the bloodied strap near his body," Saraiva said. "They assumed his wife strangled him." Saraiva said 17 witnesses told police the couple got into a loud fight on a street near the beach in Porto de Galinhas the night before Gatti died. Saraiva said Gatti had seven cans of beer, along with two bottles of wine, over the course of dinner and partying at a bar. Witnesses told police Gatti at one point picked up Rodrigues, who weighs about 100 pounds, by her chin with his right hand and tossed her to the ground. Saraiva said at that point a security guard for a local hotel intervened, only to be punched in the face by Gatti. A small crowd that had gathered around the scene grew angry, with some throwing stones and even a bicycle at the boxer, the police spokeswoman said. One stone hit Gatti in the back of the head, causing a wound that police originally said was caused by a small steak knife that was found near his body - and which police showed off to reporters the day after Gatti's death. The fracas eventually broke up, and Gatti and Rodrigues returned to the apartment in separate taxis. In an telephone interview with The Associated Press as she walked out of jail Thursday, Rodrigues said Gatti may have killed himself because he feared she would leave him after their fight, one of many during a rocky two-year marriage. "I believe that when we got home and he saw that he hurt me, he thought I would leave him, that I would tell him to just let me go, that I would separate from him," she said. "He did that in a moment of weakness. He was drunk, maybe he didn't know what he was doing, maybe he thought I would leave him the next day." According to records at the Court of Quebec's criminal and penal division, Gatti was charged on April 16 for violating a restraining order that had been filed against him. Records didn't indicate who filed the restraining order, but Gatti's mother, Ida, confirmed it was Rodrigues who had taken one out against him. Gatti, a Canadian who captured two world titles in his 16-year pro career, retired in 2007 with a record of 40-9. "This case has been resolved," Saraiva said. "While the evidence at the scene first led us to think Gatti was murdered, the autopsy results and a detailed crime scene analysis simply pointed to a different outcome." ---

The AP and police perpetuate a necessary lie
http://sports.yahoo.com/video/player...oH0vAIIumaxLYF This clip says the police found him suspended and hanged which is a lie. The wife herself said she found him at 6am on the floor. This is exactly how cover-ups take shape. The story changes and is pushed along by a passive media.
