Still a bit shaken from a potential home intruder experience. :(

Yea, still a bit shaken. Late Sunday night/early Mon morning, lots of commotion- I come out of my office to look thinking the dog maybe found a mouse or something.

But closer I get to the stairs, I realize the noise is downstairs. So I start yelling for the dog who comes out of my bedroom, and is NOT downstairs, but the noise is. I grab a rainstick from my daughter's room, only thing I can find. I start banging the walls, dog goes down with me, I get as far as dining area, noise from kitchen, I run upstairs to look for another weapon, yell for dog to come up, lock myself in my room with my kid, call police.

They come and case the outside, try to break down front door but can't unless they shoot the lock. Meanwhile, the dog is not answering to me calling his name forever. Noise stops downstairs, silence, dog not barking, nothing.

Mind you, we only moved in 3 weeks ago. I'm thinking whatever/whoever it was, got my dog.

Crazy shit. I'm pacing my bedroom with a hammer in my hand as only weapon I can find. talking to 911 on the phone and the police out my window -my heart is racing as I am looking for shadows under the door in the hallway. I hear sounds but see no shadows.

Finally, the police tell me only way to do it is I have to run down the stairs, as fast as possible, with my daughter and get to the front door and run out while they run in.

Yea, so now with hammer in hand, my daughter on my arm behind me, we run like the wind and make it outside.

they burst in and search the place. no idea what happened to my dog. they found him safe later, under the bed in my room, which there is no way he was there the whole time since we were in that room. and the dog has never gone under the bed before, so it was scared, so at least I know I wasn't imagining things.

they swept and made sure we were secure but I have to say it was one of the scariest moments of my life. The kitchen windows were not locked and they told me we are in a pretty secure area but gave me pointers on what to do and such.

And needless to say, I have been offline a couple days shaking off this shake up. So I apologize for any delay in business dealings.

Just the weirdest experience. No sign of forced entry but commotion, the dog non response, etc. everything seems fine since--and I guess like my daughter said...

"I think we just had another 'Lori Story' Mommy."

yes, alarm system next and maybe also this is a sign to consider a relationship again which my friends have been hounding me about. I will give this thought but the man must come with the 'I will protect you' hero quality and the post 'everything is fine' hug. LOL Otherwise, suggestions for alarm systems welcome.

Ok, that's the scoop and Now...officially back to business and the story of making deals!!

Fuck the handgun, get a 12 gauge. If the clack-clack doesn't do it, the warning blast certainly will.

the last thing the community needs is someone who gets startled by noises to get a hand gun.

I know if you don't like guns it's hard to go out and get one, but you have to think about it. Image if that guy got a hold of you and your little girl. OMG that just makes me want to cry for you. That guy could have really hurt you. If someone came in my house they would learn REAL FAST that I have a HUGE gun and they would never come back to my house again!!!

But alarms are great if you don't have or want to get a gun. I have had several alarms in my life, and the best alarm I liked was hooked to all the windows and doors. It was great. If any of doors or windows are opened when the alarm is set the alarm will go off and the cops will call the house in seconds. If I don't answer the phone and give them the password the cops are there in minutes. So getting an alarm like that works best. You can also set it for the doors, windows, and any movement in the house, but with pets the movement in the house alarm won't work. So look into have all the windows and doors hooked up. I loved my alarm, but for me I need to know I have a back up!!!

Alarm + Handgun If someone is there for ill intent an alarm isn't going to do shit but make their stay brief and they'll take care of what they came for quickly (unless they were just window shopping).

Buy a hand gun, learn how to use it (very important step, it's not just point and shoot or you won't hit anything but a wall), and keep a lock on it all times since you have a little one.

Store it in a place you would run to by reaction (your room apparently)...

Hi yea, I can't do a gun. Alarm for sure, thanks loryn for added info on that. I have a bisou/poodle mix. he is a 'vibe' dog...doesn't like certain people, went after a jogger - but is sweet to many people. So for him to go radio silent during this experience...just weird. He is never not by my side. he even didn't like the cable man who came in. then later, he is found under my bed...yea, didn't add up- he was scared of something that is for sure, but not until 'after' the fact.

taking me a bit of time to get back into the swing of biz, so sorry again for delay with anyone's deals, I know there are a ton in cue- but our lives are the most valuable asset of all and sometimes things like this put us back in check, though, I am pretty balanced in that area, or maybe thought I was...well I am more so now regardless.

yea, but just can't do a gun

fuck that, what if she comes home and the intruder is already in her room?

that's why you need to get a gun for EVERY room. real big fucking HUGE guns too, like the one loryn mentions. huge gun.
don't worry about getting a clumsy shotgun, too cumbersome and it doesn't have the *hello, shitbag* factor that a .44 has.

and the lock is crucial too, make sure you keep the key on your person at all times so you don't have to go looking for it, wasting time. because you will need time to unlock the gun, since there's a child in the domicile as you point out, and the gun is locked.

practice so that you do not fumble the key when you are shitting your pants that some whacked out street thug(s) are stealing your precious necklaces.

also, keep the ammunition accessible too because after you get the gun unlocked you will have to load it with ammo, easy breezy if you keep several clips loaded and stashed around the house.

wow that is crazy! Glad you and your daughter are ok though! and yes go get a alarm ASAP.

I don't think a gun is the answer if you don't know how to handle guns or like them.. they can make the whole thing worse if you aren't trained and willing to use it

and don't forget- always shoot to kill, that's a rule. you will have no probs with killing people either, since it is a rule.

any sane 9-5 work at home mom can pick up a gun and shoot someone in the fucking 6x6 and kill them moments after realizing they are being burgled and sleep good that nite.

Lori, I have a friend that is selling a home protection unit that runs about $1k. It is portable so you can take it with you when you move.

It was developed by Israeli army and has some great features. It is the only alarm system that cops treat as a code 1 since it works on visual verification (aka: no false alarms).

If interested I can get a demo set up for you.

oh and don't worry if you miss the *perp*, the bullets will simply fly through the wall of your home and probably not hit any of the neighbor's kids sleeping in the homes around your's.

in fact, even if you do hit him, a big fucking gun's, huge gun's, bullet will go right through the perp and continue on with considerable velocity.

Hope that wasn't directed to me since I did not say it was an alarm system. Studies show that the typical alarm system response time is more than 45 minutes. That is why alarm companies dispatch their own people out (AaronM's experience).

The one I am talking about has visual verification, so the cops get there immediately as it is a crime in progress.

I'm sorry you had to go though that Lori.

Gonna say something here. All logic tells me what I'm gonna say is garbage. Intelligently i think it is garbage, and I'm not a religious guy but I believe it.

I know this sounds silly but i really think some places have ghosts/spirits.

my last house was awesome, huge, riverfront etc but i honestly HATED being there alone. I heard weird noises all the time. One time early on I was there alone with my basset hound, sleeping upstairs and I heard some horrible noises from the basement. Thought someone was breaking in. Looked to the dog, he looked back at me and went under the bed shaking. Now you have to understand, my basset is no coward, I refer to him as my attack basset and he was terrified. No person scares him, that's why this was creepy. I had a KILLER alarm system in that house too so NO WAY had anyone broken in without tripping it, but I grabbed my sword (I keep a few for decoration but they are real) and went downstairs. The dog wasn't gona be alone so he followed but looked terrified, shaking the whole time. That was weird too, we wasn't gonna be alone and had to be with me. Adrenaline was pumping in me, but nothing/no one was there. In the years later I always heard things late at night in that house that spooked me. Later I often had nightmares there, ones I couldn't explain. When I sold it everyone keeps thinking I miss it, it really was an amazing house, but honestly I don't miss it one bit. Something was evil there and didn't like me.

I live in Gimli now and I don't have any of those problems with the house I'm now in, but it was build by my grandfather and always been in my family so any ghosts here are looking out for me. I fell like I've felt a few ghosts here actually but somehow they feel ok and not out to harm me but somehow welcoming.

So my advise is if it happens again - MOVE. it's just a house, feeling safe is more important and you don't want to have to rely on someone else JUST to have that feeling.

Hey Lori. Something similar happened to me this year, except I came home while they were still in my house. The intruders already found my gun and so I just took off running out the back.

Whenever you call the cops in a situation like this make sure to say "burglary in progress", this means happening right now and high priority.

Since then I've installed an alarm with motion detection IP cameras that sends pics to my email and phone which makes me feel more secure.

So my advise is if it happens again - MOVE. it's just a house, feeling safe is more important and you don't want to have to rely on someone else JUST to have that feeling.

i know have an image of you in tighty whites with a sword in hand stuck in my head.. thanks.

btw, what kind of sword??

A pistol grip shotgun is IMHO the best home defense weapon. Load the first couple with buckshot that won't go through the walls, and a couple slugs loaded after that.

Everyone knows the sound of a shotgun, the buckshot spreads so you don't have to worry so much about aiming when you're scare shitless and shaking. Pistol grip is easy to handle and maneuver inside the house.

Get a few of those 'This Home Protected by Smith & Wesson' stickers and put them on the windows.

AND - get an alarm installed.

Replace your dog with something that doesn't tuck tail and hide under the bed.

Good to hear you and your family weren't injured, though. Rather scary stuff.

Glad you're ok.

If you're not comfortable getting a gun there are plenty of options to explore. Myself, I have actually used a firearm to save my life so you know where I stand.

This happened to me about 4 years ago. My 110 pound Rotty "Elvis" ran downstairs and kept the guy that broke in , pinned on the downstairs balcony. I got down there right behind Elvis & saved the burglar from a horrible "Death by Rottweiler". I held him at gunpoint until the RCMP showed up (we were living in Canada at the time).

Elvis passed away 3 years ago, I miss that dog.

Glad you & your daughter are ok Lori!

Keep a 12 gauge tactical shotgun in your house. Mix the ammo with double-ought buckshot (wider range if you are a bad shot) and slugs (slugs can shoot further and go through walls). The first 2 or 3 shots as buckshot, the last as slugs. That way you can take him down then finish the job.

A Mossberg pump-action with a 14 - 18 inch barrel will do the trick. Keep the shoulder stock on it, the pistol grip on the back can hurt your wrist if you don't hold it right, but it's nice to have on the front. Better to brace it with your shoulder. If you don't have it in you to kill someone, you can also get bean bags or rubber buckshot that can down a person. But if you're going to only hurt them, you could open yourself up to a law suit. Just shot him in the front (never in the back) and keep shooting him until he is mush.

Death to anyone who breaks into my house. I'll deal with the repercussions later.

Glad to hear you're ok.

Same advice I gave except I suggested a pistol grip. I like how you think

thanks everyone.
Madalton--I'll take a hug anytime.
Baddog-that sounds really interesting
Sleazy--yea, I've lived with 'other energies' in the past. Wasn't going to mention that here, but yea, I thought about that too and took some steps about that 'just in case'. I am a big energy person and many know me and my 'goosebumps', vibes, shivers, constant telepathy, and being able to 'read' inside quickly. LOL. but yea-started covering bases there too. It was first thing that came to mind and had to take some power steps in that area. that is a whole other Lori Story tho.
dav3-yep changed the locks
and for the many other posts-yes, gun is just not conducive but I like the motion detector/email idea.

and JFK, don't worry-if that is the only thing I was looking for in a relationship, I would have gotten back in one by now. It's just many friends telling me time again, so it was sort of a joke. I had a lot of growing of myself to do first. And maybe in some subconscious way I was saying...wow, I am always taking care of everything/one without thinking twice...but when this happened, realized how comforting it would have been to have someone to turn to. But don't worry-I value relationships much deeper than just a need. I guess that comment was just me being a woman who is humble enough to say she appreciates a man by her side, and her by his and maybe showed me I grew up enough to let someone in again, but finding a person who 'sees me/gets me' is always the interesting part.

ok back to alarm systems, no guns, and good business

omg lori!
that is scary stuff ...

i have a gun but it is kinda worthless .. i have to keep it behind like a million locks so if i ever need it i wont be able to get to it quick enough ... but we do have an ATD alarm system installed

best purchase ever and we prepaid for like 3 years of service or something like that when we signed up ... so dont have to worry about it

the best part of our alarm is whenever ANY door or ANY window opens thru out the house i hear " Window 1 open " "Back door open" "Side door open"

it is suppose to let me know if i window is broken aswell ... and i press one button and it sends police instantly and i have a remote on the keychain that does that
