Burn Burn - Our Lady Peace
Are there any OLP fans out here?
Finally got around to listening to OLP's last album, Burn Burn. First time around, felt a bit of a downer, failing to spot anything close to the awesome songs they usually knock out, and probably influenced by all the talk regarding Raine's change in vocal styles and the lack of his signature falsetto in the latest albums after "Spiritual Machines" (and if this is due to a personal choice to not do so, or his pipes just can't hit them high notes anymore). Permeated by nostalgia, I gave the album a second listening today and found it so much better, starting to see those traces of OLP here and there. I definitely believe the best song is the closer, "Paper Moon", where Raine gives us one more taste (even if just on a pair of words on the chorus) of his classical vocal style (i wonder if it would have been so haunting to listen to if it was used more heavily on the album). Maybe less is more? Maybe they have gone mainstream (which has been said of all their efforts after "Machines", even though I have enjoyed them all and this is the first album that actually feels different for me)? Maybe they have just matured and changed with times (at least not as much as Pearl Jam, who lost me right in between Binaural and Riot Act)? Feel free to discuss, praise, complain, nag, bitch and whine, riot... ![]()
