Damn, two adults 5 kids in GMC pickup truck, no seat belt

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,...est=latestnews

damn thats horrible.

A fifth child has died after a stolen car fleeing police in California ran a stop sign and crashed into a pickup truck carrying a seven members of a young family, robbing a young couple of all of their children.

Dinuba police say that a carjacked Dodge Neon carrying the suspects sped away from police when an officer tried to pull the vehicle over for a traffic infraction Saturday afternoon. All three passengers in the Neon died when the car plowed into the truck, leaving a death toll of eight.

No one in the 1997 GMC pickup was wearing a seat belt, and the parents of the five deceased children, Carlos and Jennifer Salazar, remain in the hospital with moderate to major injuries.

Four of their young kids were killed at the scene, and a fifth ? 8-year-old Carlos Eric Salazar ? died at the hospital Sunday.

The four children who were ejected and died at the scene were identified as 7 year-old Jocelyn Grace Salazar; 4-year-old Monique Janae Salazar; 3-year-old Michael Alexander Salazar; and 1-year-old Sienna Rose Salazar, CHP Officer Felipe Martinez told FOX News on Sunday.

The Salazars were on their way to a youth football game, where 8-year-old Carlos was supposed to play, before the crash. Officers had been chasing the suspects in the Neon for four miles before the deadly collision.

Before having kids stories like these would bring me down. Now that I have kids, they make me sick to my stomach.

what is really sad is why have high speed chases? This is 2009 and I'm sure there are better ways of stopping people like this then to chase them through crowded city streets. Why not follow them until a police helicopter can get to the location and then use cop cars only to road block ahead of where they are rather to chase??

I have a full cab, 4 door truck that will easily seat 5 kids in the back. The problem is that only 3 seat belts are provided, thus when 5 are seated you are sitting on the belt hardware rendering all of them useless. This is probably true for all vehicles cars included.

people also forget the unseatbelted person will now be flying around the car at x mph. I was in a pretty serious accident where i was the only one wearing a seatbelt and most of my injuries were from unseatbelted passengers crashing into me.

Good point. I don't believe any vehicles have more than 3 seat belts per row of seats so if more than 5 are traveling you would need a vehicle with 3 rows of seats.

In 1997 I don't think you could get the 4 door versions, just extended cabs like in your pic where you had to flip the front driver or passenger seat forward to squeeze in the back. And I am pretty sure extended cabs didn't come with a front bench, so there would only be two buckets in the front. So all 5 kids would be squashed in the back.

No way they should have had 5 kids back there. Just stupidity at work.

I cannot imagine losing one of my kids much less both of them. I wonder if they is going to be a lawsuit against the police department.

Exactly, blame the the cops first, blame the thieves second, blame the parents third...

I am sorry but the parents should have had their kids in seat belts. If your car doesn't fit your famly, either have less kids or buy a bigger car. Those kids are dead because of their parents stupidity.

Why? They were just doing their job!

If they didn't want kids killed the criminals should have been responsible and pulled over and surrendered quietly.

Or get an Amish buggy. No seatbelts, no airbags, no roll bars, etc.

Point is the parents likely came from a cultural background (ok, I'm making some assumptions based on the behavior described and the family surname) in which safety isn't a big consideration much like with the Amish.

The Amish are well aware of the dangers of driving buggies, including at night, on windy, high traffic highways, such as Route 10 (many multiple fatality Amish crashes) in southeastern Pennsylvania, and yet continue to do anyway; it's a tradeoff they've accepted.

One can debate whether that's fair to the kids, but pointing out the reality.

So who to blame ...

In my view, in this instance, it's an easy call, the carjackers who didn't stop. As far as the police - should they have exercised more care? ... probably, but totally breaking off chase likely wasn't an option, if the people in the fleeing car were considered an imminent threat to others - and likely they were being they were already carjackers!

Ron

Actually, this is subjective and is debated constantly....many police departments have no chase policies and this could very well be argued whether or not they were "doing their job" correctly... in fact, unless it is a high risk felony many depts are supposed to back off the chase.
