An idea how to stamp out FAKE NICS in forums

Under your avatar, there should be a slot for the posters IP address.

That way, muppets like Cool Ice, Teencat etc would get found out quickly.

OR - admin actually does this themselves.

That's fine, it's obvious then they're legitimately part of the same setup.

Everyone should be aware in forums of people who are on the same IP. Easy to spot the bullshitters that way.

I wouldn't stop there either. Everyone who posts regularly within X posts of the original poster, I'd flag them as well for being a "booster" or sychophant. They can go on an ignore list.

Are you worried people know your IP address?

Anyway, doesn't have to be their real IP address, could be encoded - but each person tracked on that same IP would be tied in with the other.

What are you on about?

People who are on a shared connection wouldn't need to be concerned.

When someone signs in as:

a) teencat
b) bobcat
c) muscrat
d) bigdick

etc on the same IP, perhaps people should be made aware?

I run a forum myself katharos, and am getting a little tired with fuckwits on there aliasing.

As an admin, I know who they are, and the shit they're trying to pull. Why shouldn't everyone else be aware of this information?

because giving away your ip adress is like giving away adress of your house. you never know who can see your ip, you can be never safe enough to prevent hackers from installing anything to your computer and stealing your datas through opened ports. giving away ip adress is bad, and if you are doing it on your forum, you are danger for people security ... i am running forums from 98, and i know what i will never do ... give away ip adress of any of my users!

Can you not read? I already said:

Everyone who's on the same IP, then gets associated with any other nic / fake nic on the boards. Each person is assigned some kind of ID based on IP, the IP is never given away.

What are you so worried about?

Make them have their own sites/companies in sig. Invite only board.

Its NEVER a good idea to post ip's on a board, especially not in the adult.
Any webmaster or board owner doing this (as we saw one doing recently) should be shot in the balls. Its not ethical, and people doing that arent suitable for this biz.

Banning ips is more then enough.

Again. Mrfrisky, I agree, I should have said, give them an assigned ID or something, rather than actual IP. And all people associated with it, or posting regularly in related threads, get flagged.

Would help stamp out the fake kudos threads, and all the "bro" support.

there should just be a "warning, possible duplicate ID" icon next to the username.

Store the IP in a Database and simply show all Nicknames with the same IP below each nick.

If someone needs that coded, hit me up on ICQ 344688791

All I'm trying to make people aware of is:

a) people on the same / similar IP block posting with different usernames

b) tracking people who regularly post in favour of someone else (bro network) - easily tracked.

Part b was an after thought after having a slight dig at someone the other day, and suddenly all their regular buddies appeared on the scene to bro the thread up again.

That's surely not the idea of a supposedly "independent" webmaster forum.

Most boards don't really care as the more members - real or not - in the the system the better it sounds when giving figures out.

True Sarah. But it gets to a point where there are so many members, and so many with hidden agendas, that something has to be done. Or maybe it doesn't.

I give a shit in my forums because it's deception, and irritating. Perhaps in here nobody gives a toss.

I totally understand. It does feel like you nearly need to do a flow chart to know who is who at times. Still, I have found that most people that are worth chatting to either keep one name or make it pretty clear when they have changed.

Isn't it the rules of the board that one nick is all a poster is allowed...so isn't it up to the moderators to police the number of nicks a person has...and if they don't I would guess that they don't really care?
