Nice deal for Marvel ... given the lack of success of the latest Marvel movies, I think it will be a long time before Disney recoups that investment

No - the current crop (Iron Man II, Spider-Man 4, Thor, Captain America, etc) will remain with their respective studios. The purchase will not negate the contracts in place. Disney will make money on the licensing fees of Marvel's character roster.

In the long run, Disney will take over making the movies. As well, I'm sure we can expect to see the following new characters:

Wolvermouse
Spidergoofy
Pluto America
The Incredible Duck
Iron McScrooge

I mentioned this in other threads:
In the Spetember 2009 Maxim magazine article
"The Oral History of Marvel Comics", Stan Lee said
"I was always saying 'We should be another Disney.'
And now we're getting close."

Maybe he meant "We should be another Disney acquisition."

That is the most profound statement in this thread. Just curious, why all of the hating on Disney, I don't follow this very much but I don't understand why so many of you see it as an inherently bad thing?

Anyway, just curious but I am looking forward to seeing how Thor and Ironman turn out!

BURBANK, Calif. & NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Building on its strategy of delivering quality branded content to people around the world, The Walt Disney Company (DIS) has agreed to acquire Marvel Entertainment, Inc. (MVL) in a stock and cash transaction, the companies announced today.

Under the terms of the agreement and based on the closing price of Disney on August 28, 2009, Marvel shareholders would receive a total of $30 per share in cash plus approximately 0.745 Disney shares for each Marvel share they own. At closing, the amount of cash and stock will be adjusted if necessary so that the total value of the Disney stock issued as merger consideration based on its trading value at that time is not less than 40% of the total merger consideration.

Based on the closing price of Disney stock on Friday, August 28, the transaction value is $50 per Marvel share or approximately $4 billion.

?This transaction combines Marvel?s strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor with Disney?s creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties, and a business structure that maximizes the value of creative properties across multiple platforms and territories,? said Robert A. Iger, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. ?Ike Perlmutter and his team have done an impressive job of nurturing these properties and have created significant value. We are pleased to bring this talent and these great assets to Disney.?

?We believe that adding Marvel to Disney?s unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation,? Iger said.

?Disney is the perfect home for Marvel?s fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses,? said Ike Perlmutter, Marvel?s Chief Executive Officer. ?This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney?s tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world.?

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Marvel including its more than 5,000 Marvel characters. Mr. Perlmutter will oversee the Marvel properties, and will work directly with Disney?s global lines of business to build and further integrate Marvel?s properties.

The Boards of Directors of Disney and Marvel have each approved the transaction, which is subject to clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, certain non-United States merger control regulations, effectiveness of a registration statement with respect to Disney shares issued in the transaction and other customary closing conditions. The agreement will require the approval of Marvel shareholders. Marvel was advised on the transaction by BofA Merrill Lynch.

It's a great deal for Disney and Marvel. The same negative people were bashing Disney after their initial deal with Pixar...

Wow! This throws some interesting shit into the mix.

Disney of course are the kings of theme parks.
But Universal has the "Islands Of Adventure" in Fla. that has an entire Marvel section including the fucking awesome Spiderman ride and the Hulk rollercoaster amongst it.

Now what are they gonna do about all that?

What "latest Marvel movies" were those? Punisher War Zone is the only "lack of success" and it only had a $30 mil budget, so they didn't lose that much. Here's the others since 2006:

X-Men: The Last Stand
Budget $210 million
Gross revenue $459,359,555[1]

Ghost Rider
Budget $110 million
Gross revenue $228,738,393

The Incredible Hulk
Budget $150 million[1]
Gross revenue $263,427,551[2]

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Budget $130 million[1]
Gross revenue $289,047,763

Iron Man
Budget $140 million[1]
Gross revenue $585,133,287[1]

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Budget $150 million[1]
Gross revenue $363,360,426[2]

If you need help counting, that's roughly $1.31 billion profit in 4 years of movies...not counting DVD sales, merchandise sales, etc. Obviously Marvel doesn't get all that, but given what's coming in the future (Iron Man 2, Spider-Man 4, Thor, Captain America, The Avengers ++), I don't see how this is a bad investment for Disney. Marvel's been not only reaffirming the strength of characters that kids and geeks have been into for decades already, but mainstreaming them like no tomorrow with huge success. I mean Iron Man...I dunno about you but I sure didn't anticipate huuuge success with that one but nearly half a BILLION dollars profit not counting DVD/merchandise? There's not much in the entertainment world that can get that kind of bank.

They'll become the Arachnidboy ride and the Roidrager rollercoaster.

How about this: What if Pixar starts making Marvel movies?

I personally think Disney is making some really smart acquisitions that are keeping them current. I mean let's face it, most of the original Disney characters are pretty lame and there's only so much they can ilk off of those, so they have to come up with new exciting characters...or buy a studio to do that and buy Marvel's characters for some more. :P Problem solved.

Does Stan Lee get some of that?
He created the characters but didnt own the rights to them, he made them while under salary at Marvel, so Marvel owns them. Last I heard he only got a salary of 1 million a year despite the billions in profits his characters have made.
