Anyone seen Che yet?
![]() I just threw away the better part of my Sunday watching Che, parts I and II, what a disappointment. Love him or hate him these movies don't really show you enough of the man to make you feel either. It seems more built around the minutia of his field experiences than his ideology or his deeds. No matter how you feel about Guevara you cant' deny Che was a dynamic and charismatic figure, and as awesome as Del Toro is in the part that doesn't really come across. First, the opening "geography" sequences that start each movie were absolutely boring and pointless. Major Fail. Possibly the worst movie opening sequence of all time. ![]() Part I, "The Argentine", focuses mainly on the battles of the Cuban revolution. Almost 2 solid hours of following Che both in his experiences on the front lines and the training he did behind them fueling the Cuban Revolution. I expected Part II, "The Guerrilla", to pick up where Part I left off but instead starts with Che being dropped into Bolivia and then continues with all the details of his battles there. They skip over his disenchantment with Cuba, falling out with Castro, never mention Che's failed campaign in Africa, etc. The films too literally follows Che's field notes and fail to properly set the stage getting into the circumstances that brought him there. I guess rather than try to get a point across one way or another the films decide to avoid driving home any ideals at all. There's also lots of dialog and interaction with other characters, but much like how they treated Che, the main subject himself, you don't learn much about these people or their backgrounds either. All in all you're in for a little over 4 hours of subtitles and fighting in the bushes. Soderburg's not really an "action" director either, so even if you're one for war movies you will probably be disappointed here as well. Don't waste your time w/ this one, even Che's Wkipedia page is more exciting. |

Amen to that, every time I see some idiot with a tie dyed Che t-shirt and Birkenstock sandals that smells like Patchouli oil and ass I want to smack him in the back of his fucking head...

This reminds me, I was dating a girl once that loved the smell of Patchouli oil, so she bought me a bottle one day and begged me to wear it. After initially resisting I finally relented and put a few dabs on my neck on one of the very rare days in my life that I wore a suit (we went to a wedding), and of course I was wearing a pretty expensive white shirt. The result? When I sweated a bit the Patchouli ran down my neck and stained the collar of my white shirt brown, and I could never get it out. Fucking patchouli...

I had heard this was actually decent... might have to give it a look since I'm hearing contrary reports.

the movie is good and very well documented, the first part a little better than the second. Of course you can't expect any Rambo-like action because that only happens in Hollywood, but if you like a good historical movie where people are human and when they get a bullet in the head they die, then it's more than OK.
If you want to know how he got there, you should watch "The Motorcycle Diaries", based on Che's own memories. And it's a really good and entertaining movie as well with some amazing photography and music on top of an excellent story

I agree with Harvey, an interesting well made movie. Great acting and showing that ordinary people can make history...

I'm surprised that some of you liked it. I thought it was very flat, especially for being almost 4 and a half hours total.
I've seen and read Motorcycle Diaries and am very familiar with Che's backstory, I guess that is why I found this so dissapointing. |

I did. Also have read Che Guevara's full bibliography and I'm friend to his family both in Cuba and Argentina so I'm quite informed on the subject. Even more, I had the pleasure to know Alberto Granados last year. He was Guevara's partner on that trip and adviser on the movie (I mean the one related on "Motorcycle Diaries") . The guy is exactly the same as in the movie, always laughing and joking, only that he has 80 something.
btw, a little secret: the so called "Guevara's granddaughter" that posed for PETA is a fake, she's not related to the family, just the daughter of a mythomaniac who claims he's Che's son although he always refused to be DNA tested
