Hero or fool

I know this person who is a friend and whose cousin recently intervened in a domestic dispute. His cousin apparently heard a neighbors wife crying for help as her husband was beating her. He called the cops but in the meantime went to assist the woman. The husband shot him and he is now dead. My question is this, hero or fool?

Both.

If people didn't have so many issues these days he never would have been shot. Hence, he would have been a "hero".

Sad thing, the woman will probably never care that he died for her and return to loving the beater.

My mom used to get beat down by her boyfriend not my dad when i was young. I remember being outside and watching him steal her car. She jumps on the hood and then gets flung onto the road as he drives off. I was 8 yrs old. I regret to this day not doing something to help.

very true, but he's not just a beater anymore... she can find someone else while he sits in jail

Sophmoric.

He died for a cause, but the cause wasn't worthy of death.

Never step in the middle of a domestic dispute.

You can never truly know the forces at work. That's way police are always on such high alert for domestics, as those are dangerous cases.

There are similar cases where a man jumps in to beat the husband, and the wife kills the same man who came to her defense.

sad but true.

What could you have possibly done at 8 yrs old? Bite him on the ankles?

It wasn't your fault man. Don't feel guilty.

hero who perhaps didn't step back enough to think to call the police. That said, perhaps that is the different between heros and the rest of us.

Without a doubt.

I'm just disappointed in how many of you would not intervene.

It is unusual to end up shot more likely the wife beater is a coward who will back down or at worse hit you. Then he is more likely to go to prison than hitting his wife.

Sad world we live in.

you certainly can not call him a fool, he basically risked his life to help another human being, but at the same time he is not a hero, since he did not save the woman, but got shot himself

In the above post it says he called the police, but in the meantime he went to help her because she was screaming for help.

I had to console a girl who's boyfriend beat her in a pub while we waited for the cops to come and a friend kept him preoccupied (he was drunk)..... not good.. he thought I was making moves on her.... it sucks to get in the middle of that.. especially if you know them... I had to take a bloodtest afterwards cause I got a bit of hers on me and her last boyfriend used speed... bleh.

most beaters will back down when another man gets involved.. so it's something that should be done.. a bit different over here too where people don't carry handguns.. i don't know about going into someone's house though.. especially given the amount of times the girl will head straight back to him.. you might also be charged with assault...

FOOL, total and complete FOOL. He failed to take into consideration the simple fact that 1/5 Americans own a freaking GUN, and this guy is voilent so he probably a higher chance of having a gun.

I mean sure do that in New Zealand, Aussie, UK but NOT in a country FULL to over flowing with Guns.

... the guy is a complete fool. calling the cops was ok, but he should have stayed at home ...

I once backed up a guy that got beat up, I didnīt even know the poor bastard, but he was getting done buy 3. so I steped in and tried to help him out, next thing I remember was waking up in hospital ... and now the best part, I ended up paying all the hospital bills myself ... the insurance refused payments ... so if you want to be a hero, think about it twice ... I will never ever help someone (in a similar situation) again ...

You got it right. I was being trained as a domestic violence counselor at one time. Before the training I went through, YES I would have tried helping the woman. Now I don't think so, other than calling the cops. It's now just dangerous but VERY dangerous. Cops hate domestic calls, because they are so dangerous and don't have a clue what might happen.
