Ok any x-dentist here? I'm not sure what to do. Need some advice for my 5 year old

My 5 year old daughter went to the dentist yesterday and the dentist said she needs to get the following work done...

She has 9 cavities, needs 2 crowns, 1 extraction, 1 root canal, and a space retainer.

Isnt this a little extreme for a 5 year old? I mean wont her teeth be falling out soon anyway? Everyone keeps telling me that I'm just getting scammed but I want to make sure my baby is took care of. Total amount for the work is only $3,700 but still I don't want to pay for that unless I really have to.

$3700 for that? too bad you are not near la, i would refer my dentist.

that being said, why would the doc crown baby teeth that are soon to fall out?

cavities need to be fixed, no exception. why the extraction?

if you think scam, get a second opinion, dentist visits are relatively inexpensive.

oral health is a priority!

I think it sounds like excessive work but it also makes me wonder WTF?! Are you teaching her how to properly clean her teeth and making sure that she does it? Some people seem predisposed for teeth problems, but wow, that's a lot.

I had my first cavity just recently. It was on a wisdom tooth so I just had it pulled.

I think you should get a second opinion.

When I was little they did all kinds of crazy shit to my mouth that wound up causing problems when my adult teeth that came in later.

She does with me, the problem is with my ex. I now watch her full time but up until she went into kindergarten my ex watched her 3-4 days per week and I'm just guessing by the way my ex handles everything else in her life that she probably went days if not weeks sometimes without brushing her teeth. I would get her after 4 days sometimes and her teeth would be disgusting.

Sensitive teeth do run in our family too though. I always brushed, flossed and rinsed as a kid but yet I always had work to be done, even my last visit 3 moths ago I had work that needed to be done and I am so crazy about brushing because all of my childhood dentist visits.

I'm not sure why they would give her a root canal. Where they do an extraction they need to put in a space retainer so her adult teeth have space to come in later. The cavities need to get fixed for sure and the crowns are probably for cavities too deep to just fill in. If you just yank out the bad teeth the rest will move into that space and leave no room for her adult teeth. Plus, she's only 5 so she's going to have those baby teeth for awhile longer.

Basically I'm saying I would have everything done except the root canal which I would question. I would also get a second opinion and quote. Did you take her to a pediatric dentist?

same questions here...
I asked a family member, he is a dentist
He said the The price seems ok , and it's possible for a 5 years old to get that amount of work, especially if it's her first visit.
Get a second opinion!

By the way thanks everyone for your help, this is the third dentist she has seen this month but just the first that was able to get her to do her x-rays, we new there were major problems just by looking but we didn't get a for sure answer until we got her x-rays yesterday.

Also, you might be looking at a situation where they need to sedate her. That's a lot of work for a little kid to go through while awake. It is a common misconception that you should just pull their baby teeth out, but it's really not always the best thing to do.

I feel for you; it sucks watching your little one go through something like this!

They probably want to extract any front teeth that can't be easily fixed since those will be falling out soon anyway. But they should be crowning any molars because those WON'T be falling out anytime soon and the kid needs to be able to chew for the next 5 years.

Sounds like a scam. Get a second opinion. I had a dentist try to scam me like that once. I got a second opinion, had zero problems.

When my brother was her age he had to have oral surgery. He had a bunch of cavities and his teeth were eating away due to some disease. He brushed his teeth twice a day and flossed. If you want a second opinion take her to a dental specialist.
