Porn sites get their own domain: '.xxx'

Porn sites get their own domain: '.xxx'

By Stephanie Goldberg, Special to CNN

(CNN) -- It's a big day for the porn industry.

On Friday, ICANN, the not-for-profit corporation that coordinates the internet's naming system, voted to allow the application of the controversial ".xxx" top-level domain name for sites that display adult content.

The domain, which would need further approval before going live on the internet, would be applied to adult entertainment sites just as ".com" is now.

The .xxx internet suffix, which was first proposed six years ago by ICM Registry, a group that sells domain names, "will provide a place online for adult entertainment providers and their service providers who want to be part of our voluntary self regulatory community," according to that company's news release.

Adopting .xxx will be optional. However, some tech blogs speculate a push to make the domain mandatory for adult-only sites.

ICM Registry has already taken 110,000 pre-reservations for the domain, which could be available in early 2011, if not sooner, its news release states.

While the company says labeling adult content online "will allow for simple and effective filtering for those who wish to do so," not everyone is pleased with ICANN's decision to approve the domain.

Some people involved in the industry are hesitant to accept the domain, "fearing it will lead to censorship, as it would be very easy to block the entire domain instead of individual sites," Rick Johnson of Portfolio.com wrote Thursday.

On the other hand, "some religious groups are against the creation of the domain, as it would lend more legitimacy to the adult entertainment industry," he wrote.

What do you think of the ".xxx" top-level domain? Is it necessary? Let us know with comments on this post.

Torrents, tubes, and now this.

It's a good time to transition out of this business.

in a few years .xxx will be nothing more than a memory. look at all of the other tld's introduced in the past 5 years. none have taken hold of the public or webmasters.

Yeah a few stations are reporting that is it mandatory, or making it sound like it is mandatory.

I am not surprised. It's the same people who start betting on BP.
I will not get a xxx version of my domains. And if I find that somebody is domain stalking me, I'll sue them.

icann will be passing tld's for anyone with 150k soon enough. there is talk of .eco, .gay, etc. all this will do is confuse everyone. you'd think a standard for all sites would be a much better way to go but hey, they needs monies.

if there's a silver lining I guess its that there will be no need to participate in any crazy landrush to buy the domains as everything with any type-in potential or even slight value will already be in the hands of the various degenerates that assisted ICM.

I got up at 3am and watched the ICANN proceedings. They passed a resolution sending ICM's application for .XXX back to GAC for evaluation to see if the application still met the requirements for establishment. There were two abstentions and comments were made that some of the Board members were very uncomfortable with the vote as they believed that they were voting on something that was not representative of the facts.

Without industry support, the ICM application should die in the GAC when they do their evaluation and find that the application does not have the support of its' community as alleged in the application. We can still kill this beast.

When GAC reopens public comments which I expect will be soon, be sure you take a moment and express your opinion.

Most news casters blew the coverage and got the story wrong......

If .xxx domains are not mandatory for adult sites.. why cry about it?? We have .biz, .info, .org, .net, .com and no one gives a fuck what is on them even though each one has its own content definition.

the problem is it is not unlikely that it will become mandatory which would be a HUGE clusterfuck... thats why it should not be created in the first place.

Yeah, that would be. But it is not so far. Can you imagine tranferring all the huge sites onto new domains?

What would happen to the old .com porn domains?? Would they become worthless?
