I wonder how it'll do compared to "This is it."

I think it will make a lot of money, and the biggest surprise will be that the largest chunk of people going will be 30-40 year olds that grew up with the book.

I am pretty sure either the Author or the owners have been VERY picky about such things. Sort of like the Suess as well as the Tolkien owners had been.

With such things you only get one real chance at the apple so to speak. Well I suppose some get more since they have more books but still. People hold such stories so close to their hearts that it is super difficult to let just anyone change it or possibly change it.

I do think it will be huge, I do think there will be lots of merchandising and well a big Halloween for it. Curious though, it is not the warmest story in the world and well I heard they stayed true. Wonder if that will turn people off.

actually, i just saw an interview about this.. maurice basically let spike do what he wanted.. the basis is true to the book, but their are some differences, although he didnt divulge..

what maurice did say, was that the movie was going to be controversial...

so, not really sure what he means by that...

and yes, as stated by another poster, i think the 30-40 y/o will go see it too..

i predict 100 million opening weekend if they put it in enough theaters...

I'm taking my Daughter and "The Babysitter" along with Wulf's wife and kids to a "Wild Rumpus Day"

Three stop deal around town:

Library for a monster craft
Book Store for a reading of the book and a craft
Then to the movie theater to see the movie

(there's some special thing you get if you do all three stops I guess)

yeah, it was a pretty cool interview... lots of respect for maurice by spike..

and some cool stories about the book from maurice, like how the book was banned at a lot of places and that is was spread around by librarians and started gaining traction when it was the most requested books at libraries..

social networking 70's style...

Like I said it is not the most jolly kids story ever written. Some dark topics, emotional material, parental issues, etc.

Heck when was the last time anyone read it? Then imagine it stretched to 80-100 minutes.

I don't know..

I (40 years) am not into it. won't be seeing it until HBO on demand,
my son (15 years) is not interested either.

I'm guessing it will be the # 1 and I hope Spike did a good job on it. But as far as box-office, I kind hope it doesn't do as well as the studio plans because if it's a big success guess what we get to see for the next 3 years? Children's books directed by music video directors galore! I don't think I need to see Lonesome Sam as directed by McG anytime soon.

My prediction is 36Mill opening weekend.

It's second on my list for this week. Seeing Law Abiding Citizen tomorrow; though it will be considered a low earner.

from what you posted, you'd be better off spending the money on a head shrinker...

no, seriously, did your parents read it to you? did you read it to your son? did his mother read it to him?

its an iconic classic...

i dont remember the book 100%, but i am definitely looking forward to seeing..

from the trailers, i think spike has done a great job, but if it wasnt for me nieces and nephew i would wait until dvd release..

I never read the book as a kid.

But I saw the previews and I really like the style that was used. It seems perfect and I'm so glad they didn't do any crazy special effects. It looks almost low budget and I think that's perfect.

You could read the book in a few minutes if you wish.

I bet $50 mil...I'm not so sure many kids unaware of the book will be that excited to see it (TBH to me it looks plain weird from the previews and I've never read the book). Plus it's not exactly summer anymore...most super blockbusters are summer and winter - this to me doesn't strike as one. $50 mil would still be a great opening for this month, and the avg BoxOfficeMojo prediction is only $34.1 mil. It's being released in 3500+ theaters so I'm sure it'll probably do more.

i think it was around 30 million in US for the weekend. it was ok, different than I expected. not as much for the young kids as one would think. a lot emotional and relationship issues being deal with in the film.
