Has Avatar made money yet?

I know it has grossed over a billion but does anyone know if that number is gross ticket sales and then the theater keeps some of it is the amount that goes right back to the movie?

Usually movie theaters keep 45 to 55% of the receipts.
Distributor then take a 25 to 45% cut.
Print and advertising expenses are then deducted from the remaining balance.
In most case, a movie will need to gross about $25M before it brings revenues to the actual movie makers (Investors, Studio if any, Producers, Director and all above the line people that were supposed to get a piece of the pie).

Also, keep in mind that for 90% of movies, the real money is not in theatrical distribution but in the international sales, DVD rental, DVD sales, domestic and international cable TV's rights and a shitload of other ways they can make money.

In Avatar's case, when the dust settles, you're looking at a movie that will bring in close to $3B!!!

Not sure about foreign box office but in North America general the studios get about 50% of the take of a movie. they get much more at first but then less as each week goes by and thus it averages to about 50%. With Avatar still making good money after 6 weeks this is really a boon to the theaters who are now getting the bigger share. So at any rate out of $560 million in North America one can asume the studio has made about $280 mil. Or almost enough to pay for the movie. So foreign box office is just gravy no matter what the % is.

Then of course will come the money made from video games, movie rental, DVD, blu-ray, PPV, digital download, cable( HBO, Showtime etc ). Also all the other money made via promotions like McDonald's and other products. Of course ther are the action figures and other toys. Also thing like bedsheets, towels other stuff like that. Posters etc etc.

I wouldn't be so sure about the "bonus" income. The movie's main plus is 3D. The movie is not that special in regular 2D, so I don't expect any record sales after it leaves the theaters.

It's easy enough to throw some 3D glasses in with the blu-ray or dvd, with one extra disc containing the 3D version. They recently did this with The Final Destination.

Should be basically the same effect I would think.

You do realize only about 20% of theaters actually showed it in 3-D. My local theater sure didn't.

In Avatar's case, the bonus income will come from DVD sales and rentals, look at Titanic's numbers:
http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/1997/TITAN.php
$1.2B in international DVD rentals and sales, a small $55M in TV rights.
Avatar will do as well if not better. And let's not forget all the royalties from toys, games.....

I have Journey to the center of the earth on blu-ray in 3D, I bought it basically only because the 3D effects, but they are horrible. Its too simple made, almost impossible to look at for too long, far away from 3D theaters. And until 3D projectors and 3D TVs are on the market, anything else will be just not good enough.

Thats interresting...would never think that so many people go watch the 2D version. I would love to see the income stats broke down by 2D and 3D.

Ok my bad

Avatar was released in a total of 3,457 theatres in the US, of which 2,032 theatres are running it in 3-D.

That's still 41% NOT showing it in 3-D

3D or 2D, whatever, people are going to buy this DVD regardless.

That's a fact.

Are all those millions upon millions of people sheep? Some people think so, but that too is irrelevant.
