Computer nerds...I need some advice please.
My primary computer that I use has a combination DVD and CD drive. It quit reading and began to tell me to insert disk. I searched google and tried all of the advice I located...but none of it worked. I then did a clean install of a new operating system thinking that this would clear out whatever problems in the registry that existed that may be causing the problem...but the same problem still exists.
I then removed a DVD drive from an old computer I had on hand...it is a DVD drive only and not a combo...and installed it in my primary computer. The same problem exists...insert disk...and I know for a fact the DVD drive worked fine in the old computer. Can anyone suggest a fix for this problem.

Check the physical connection between motherboard and drive or buy a new motherboard.

two things come to mind - if you haven't messed with the Bios at all - you could have a bad cable a bad motherboard - look at your system information and see if the drive shows up at all - if no replace the cable and or motherboard
if yes it may be a jumper setting on the back of the drive or still a bad cable / MB |

try pulling the bios battery out from the motherboard, turn the computer back on and see if the problem still happens

if it says insert disk then your settings in your bio might be set to boot from cd, check that first and if it is set it to hard drive...if thats not the problem then the OS might be corrupt on the hard drive if you see the hard drive there during the boot up then that will probably be the case, you might be able to get away with a reinstall on the same hard drive, otherwise the hard drive failed and you need a new one

If your system is telling you to "Insert System Disk and press enter" then your OS is corrupt as per post above, it's nothing to do with the DVD drive and clearing CMOS and or Bios isn't going to do shit.
Insert your windows disk and try to do a repair.... |

That is not the case and I tried a repair. I suppose it can be the cable so I will use the cable from my old computer and see what happens...but I am working tonight so I will not try that until tomorrow. I personally think it is a registry problem.

try updating the driver for the hardware?
my opinion is that DVD & CD players are garbage. Every computer i owned, either some discs don't get read, or no discs get read, or it reads discs but can't burn them. |

The problem is most likely the nut behind the keyboard.
