my car almost started on fire..any idea why??

Ok, so the battery in my car was dead..at least I thought it was. So I went to boost it and when I hooked up the cables, there seemed to be more sparkage than usual and then the booster cables started smoking, and other wires appeared to be smoking as well (on the car I was boosting) a lot of smoke was definitely coming from somewhere. I noticed afterwards that the ground wire from the alternator to the battery was broken. I am not sure if this was a result of the "fire" or something that happened beforehand. Would replacing this wire fix the problem? Could the other battery wires now be damaged and should be replaced? Do you think there would have been any damage to the wiring or the battery of the car that I was attempting to boost it from? Never had this happen before.

Or the inside of your battery is broken or you should use bigger (thicker) cables next time
Try to put a new battery in and see what happens.

I guess I should have posted this on an automotive forum. I just thought some people might have an idea. I don't drive that car very much but I don't want to get rid of it. I have another car for my daily driving.

I'm not sure the problem is the battery. The last time i got the oil changed they tested the battery and said it was fine but the car is dying for some reason as this is the second time in a month I've had to boost it. The battery is also only a couple of years old. As for the cables, I have boosted a number of cars over a number of years with them and never had any issue.

Average lifetime of a car battery is 2 years
Also a battery can be fine the first day and broken the next so you never really know...

But of course like you said, it can also be a problem with your car (bad ground or short circuit somewhere in the cables)

Not below freezing where you are is it? Also not to sound stupid, but you did have positive to positive and negative to negative right? Also when you do a jump you should have the negative on an solid metal connection under the hood, not on the negative terminal.

If its below freezing you could have a frozen battery as well.

Also make sure that your broken alternator cable doesn't touch any car metal when you start again next time...unless you want more fire of course

Nah, GFY has you covered.

You need to take off the RK6 manifold. Look it up online. Very easy to do. Inside there is something called a flux capacitor. The wire on that is loose.

attaching a 24V loader to a 12V battery gives that effect

Most cars do not have a ground cable from the alternator to the battery, they have a positive wire that sends the charge from the alternator to the battery.

So, maybe you had the cables crossed from the booster.

fix the alternator ground, you're burning out the alternator which will then kill the battery.

Fuck me How could I have done that?? Sure enough, I did though. I hope it didn't fuck up the car I was boosting from. I had the cables on the battery right on that car. What a fuck up. I can only hope I don't have to replace the alternator and the battery now.

Only if you buy cheap batteries.

Figured out the problem though, I see.
