We are thankful that the Indians didn't have any type of coast guard to keep our conquering asses in europe.

i dunno - in the US Thanksgiving is a holiday to celebrate a truce between native Indians and the first English settlers who in reality were religious kooks called the Pilgrims. In Canada Thanksgiving is a celebration that the fall harvest season is over.

traditional Thanksgiving dinner is turkey with stuffing, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie etc

it's a big holiday for college kids who are away from home - usually their first trip home since leaving home in august/sept for college. in many families it is one of the few holidays where people travel from all over to get together.

these days it's really become the official start of the Christmas shopping season.

Thanksgiving is simple. It is a day for theocrats to thank their loving god for leading them to their promised land by stealing it from pagans, murdering them into converting to Christianity, warehousing them on reservations, stripping every last bit of dignity from them, addicting them to alcoholism and drugs, and letting them kill themselves. Praise the holy sheep a JESSSUS!

Thanksgiving is a nice family holiday in the US. It is very similar to Christmas minus all the commercialism and pressure. One of my favorite holidays.

That is actually a fairy tale.

The truth behind Thanksgiving isn't the fun little story of pilgrims and Indians sitting down for a big meal that they teach you in school when you are five. No such meal ever took place.

There was a New England settlement that used a form of communism. Their residents were not very productive under the system and the result was a high level of deaths each winter. To signify the tough times ahead, they would have a feast going into the winter months. Their last big meal.

Then they moved away from communism, people became more productive and they had enough food to last through the winter months. They also decided to continue the yearly feast, only it would now signify a thanksgiving for all they had. The tradition spread and lives on to this day.

I always celebrate Thanksgiving on Friday and Christmas on The 26th. Why? Because that's when they're over.

It's all good. Happy Thanksgiving.

What i really like is no mail delivery.

Well said btw Mutt.

it's based around an old american tradition of torturing and beheading the pagans. the torture was so painful that the pagans would be thankful to finally die, thus 'thanks'-giving.

now of course it has mellow somewhat, and is mainly a day for men to get together and lock the womenfolk in the kitchen while they get drunk and watch beefy men in tight clothes on tv.

Mutt forgot the all essential part of the meal:

Mashed potatoes and gravy.

And of course corn on the cob would be traditional although it is in reality way to late in the season. Oh and of course someone better mention football. But really a day to pig out.

The dinner food elements must have not been previously known in Europe, there was no turkey, cranberries or corn in the old country, just pork and cabbage.

The Indians moved to America from Asia that's why their Mongol looking faces. Just like the J*ws, the Chinese and the East Indians, they all came here form Asia. All glorious things come from Asia.

It really is prob the best American holiday to me.

Alot of people (in the northern hemisphere) do a lot of outdoor work in the fall before winter hits and its a good time to be glad that it is done and you can chill a while. Fun things like painting, woodworking, landscaping, preparing for the NW winds you know.

Great points Judge, Asia is way older than North America.
