All the piracy talk lately got me thinking

and looking.

Anyone know anything about Flash Media Server 3 and their claims about protecting content with RTMPE, SWF verification and token based authentication with a time expiring URLs?

Does all of this actually keep your content out of the hands of idiots that are going to upload it to god knows where for the whole world to see/download?

These features make downloading of your video content slightly more difficult for the average surfer, but does not make it impossible.

Also, I believe FMS Interactive server is required for some of the more advanced protection features, as they are not included in the Flash Media Streaming Server.

I don't know if there's any possible protection for content. After all, if you can download it - you have it. And then you can distribute it.

Anyway, content thiefs are bad. I like to hotlink pictures of Karen O. But, that's only because I'm a stupid fan.

I think you are tight but Adobe uses FMS as a term for all of their products in that family so it isn't quite clear. FMS is the freebie version only allows 10 users, FMS Interactive is the unlimited user version I believe, it also carries a $4500 price tag.

Anyone can run a TV card into a VCR. or record a video screen with a camcorder. As soon as just 1 copy hits the share sites, game over.

It is rather confusing to differentiate between their products and their features:
Adobe Flash Media Streaming Server: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediastreaming/
Adobe Flash Media Interactive Server: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediainteractive/

The Adobe Flash Media "Development Server" is basically the Adobe Flash Media Interactive Server feature set but restricted to only 10 connections. Their fine print explains which features are available in one and not the other.

Maybe some of you are too young to remember the origin of online porn, the bulletin boards followed by tgps like HUN, online porn is born from piracy and it got to the point it is now because of it, to reject that is like Microsoft firing Bill Gates, perhaps not alltogether a bad idea but..

Wowza Media Server is a much cheaper alternative and it supports all the same features adobe FMS does, and is much easier to setup.

Any reputable host should be able to provide this option to you on a montly subscription base.

OK I guess the question then is, is it worth the expense if ppl can still circumvent the system?

Remember a few years ago when someone figured out how to embed a virus into a jpg? I was trying to think of a way to do something like that with video that would embed IP and other info about the person who downloaded the vid originally.

I don't know but I watched some PDC conference live on Silverlight and it was sick. THe fucking player was faster than my cable box! I imagine MS has built some protection into it as well
