DMOZ... Experiences?

Hey.

I had submitted my website to DMOZ a couple of months ago. That they were slow I knew, but what happened today was really.... interesting to call it.

Someone who claimed to be an editor of DMOZ contacted me and asked me for money to get listed into the directory, which I found very odd. He said he would charge $250 to list me immediately. He also had to point out, that if I'm not willing to pay, my website won't get listed for a while, if ever. While $250 might sound "reasonable", I refused to pay for it, as DMOZ is a free open directory and this is pure corruption from the editor's side.

Declining a website I can understand for various reasons but corruption? Seriously, by all means - do they get away with it? Is there a way we can report this to DMOZ themself?

After looking around on Google for a bit, there were quite many subjects about DMOZ Editor corruption, what about you? Did you ever run into a case where you were being charged a sum of money by an editor to get listed?

I would contact DMOZ. Sounds like they have a scammer on board.

What a shady cunt.

Tell him to accept the site first and let you know when exactly it will go online. Pay by Paypal (easy chargeback if necessary) and make sure to note his name/address if you get the chance. Even though the guy is a scumbag, $250 for a DMOZ link is a pretty good deal.

Lol, yep, that's DMOZ alright. You can't report it either because you'd just be reporting it to other corrupt DMOZ editors. All DMOZ editors are corrupt in one form or another, whether it's by taking bribes, denying their competition, listing their own sites, or listing friends. Best thing you can do is either try and become an editor so that you can list your own sites or just avoid DMOZ altogether. DMOZ is essentially one big cluster fuck of shit.

I'm not paying. If anything, I'll be reporting him for corruption. It's not the amount of money that's bothering me, it's the corruption and personal profit out of something that is forbidden by DMOZ themself.

If he tries to milk money out of his editor status to me, then I'm probably not the only person he's trying it with.

Tamashi, if you have the original email, then I'd do what baddog suggested and send in a complaint. Not everyone is corrupt.

I bet they get thousands of submissions a week, but since they know your trying to make money with the website...they figure lets make money too. Last time I submitted a website to them was in 2001 and got listed 6 months later. You should still report the issue to them.

No use reporting as the ones you are reporting it to are the ones doing it.

I have to agree with this. What's the traffic like with them now-a-days? It's been years since I even tried.

Editor corruption. I don't think you can really call it that. I mean an Editor can use his personal views in deciding whether to list something or not, right? It's like a magazine editor deciding whether to write about somebody or not. It's not corruption if they don't list you. And if you happen to pay too much for it - well that's just bad business for you, and good business for them.

Trixxxia, you are an ODP/DMOZ editor. Why is it that DMOZ editors are the only ones to ever claim that not all editors are corrupt?

IMO, enough of DMOZ is corrupt to make the claim that "ALL" of DMOZ is corrupt. In other words, when 99 out of 100 editors are corrupt, that constitutes the validity of stating, "All of DMOZ is corrupt."

Of course they are not all corrupt, but it is a strange setup where a site owner can become an editor and then potentially reject their competitor listings.

dmoz should be free.

I ran several categories on there, and was in with them for a while. Most of the people on there (I'm talking 7 years ago now), took their role very seriously.

I don't know anyone there anymore, and would say since google more or less threw in the towel, it has gone to the dogs.

Forget about the place, it just isn't worth the hassle. It's not 2001 anymore...
