It's a network issue, their BGP routes are disappearing and reappearing enough times for routers to apply penalties. Their IPs are effectively being (temporarily) blacklisted by a large portion of the net.

I can ping their dns servers now (couldn't earlier) but they are NOT responding to queries, this looks more like they took a power hit.

I tried icq'ing Bari last night, didn't get a response till 8 this morning, tried again just now, no response.

It means they need to geographicly split their servers.

They had a similar problem about a year ago, all of a sudden started having a series of short term outages, and promises were made, looks like they weren't kept.

I personally think that DNS hosting at your registrar is a bad idea since it introduces a second point of failure. If your webhost goes down then it doesn't really matter whether the DNS works, since your sites won't... but what happens if your DNS host goes down?

Not completely true, if your web and mail are on different unrelated servers, then a failure on your webhost (if they also do your dns) will cause a mail failure as well, not a good solution.

DNS is SUPPOSED to be at the top of the food chain when it comes to reliability, redundancy, and uptime. I personally would NEVER let my webhost OR mailhost do dns, and for good reason, if they get pissed for some stupid reason, your held hostage, but if your dns is independent, its a simple change to point elsewhere.

Agreed, if mail is important, but for those of us that have a million little freesites with no need (or desire) for surfers to contact us it's not so high on the list of priorities.

They can't really hold it hostage since you can just change the name servers at your registrar. (Which is why you should never let your webhost register domains for you)

Granted this may take a little longer to propagate than a quick change to your zone file.

It does seem strange that a major registrar uses 4 DNS IPs from within the same block, meaning same route, same D/C, possibly even same server. That's an elementary mistake.

That always bugged me that their DNS servers were not separated geographically.

And one that was identified, has broken before, and was promised to be fixed more than a year ago.

I started a small ISP in 1996 and even back then we had reciprocal arrangements to run each other's secondary name servers. For a major registrar in 2009 it's a no brainer.

Just tried to call them but they apparently only offer support till 12 EST. The message states one can create a support ticket online but their site uses the same DNS servers so one can't do that.

Moniker is not some "small registrar"

Remember back in 2008 " Oversee.net acquired domain registration and auction powerhouse Moniker for what is believed to be $65 million."

Do you switch hosts when they're down for 2 hours? Just take it easy for a while.

The site is reachable but it looks like they're having application related problems... or maybe their DNS servers are still not working... I'm trying to reg a new domain and it's getting stuck at step 1, checking the status of the domain requested.

I am with Rowan on this one. You really should separate that shit out so if the company goes bankrupt or any host of problems like fire in the server building, etc, you can always move certain shit to other providers...

Spoke too soon, I've been billed and the registration has been processed, but 2 hours later it's still not showing up globally. I guess Moniker are still recovering.

Sorry for any inconvenience everyone. Moniker WAS down for about an hour or so during the night due to a network outage however we are back up/running.

Thanks

Frankly, due to the obscene amount of abuse moniker can handle, and the professional support they have. I will never be moving from them.

Yes, their web interface blows.
Yes, they had downtime.

but also

Yes they are cheap
no they WILL NOT shut you off when some bitch calls to complain about your domain
yes, they ALWAYS take care of my problems.

a couple hours of downtime does suck, but again I can live with that... everyone has issues once in a while.

For those of you that complain and cry... let me put this in perspective...
if you did 1 MILLION dollars in sales a month (a few of you here crush that number, but most of you are posers) 2 hours of downtime is $2800. I dont know about you, but if a different domain registrar just yanked your domains even once for 1 day in 5 years , say like direct nic) because it was teen related, or spam related or something random that bitchy web surfer came up with. you made out ahead with moniker.

They can have my biz. people aint perfect, and fuckups happen.

Been down much longer than an hour (see this thread for a more accurate timeframe), and the domain I registered 4 hours ago still isn't showing up in WHOIS... it's still available to register elsewhere...

The transaction ID is 32907559 if you want to look into it

They are working on the issues due to the network outage. Email me directly with the info including your account #, domain name etc and I'll be sure to follow up.

Once again, I am sorry for the inconvenience.

I think it doesnt matter what known establised registrar you go with but having 24-7 support for both hosting and domains is very important ,this is the main reason I use Godaddy (great to be able to pick up the phone on a sunday night if needed ,even if its just to ask a question ).

If Moniker ever impliments this vital feature...id be the first to switch over a bulk of domains to try them.

When you have the DNS set to your own host a downtime doesn't matter does it?

Just curious, if your domains with registrar A and that company goes down, what happens with your domains?(assuming you are using the DNS/NS of your host)

Sure it matters, you would be down. Moniker does not offer hosting...so if you want a website up you need to have an outside host. Most domainers use moniker since they are very good with security...and need an account if you plan on participating in Moniker/snapname auctions. The best domains go through Moniker/snapnames, Sedo, namejet, and Rick Latona.

Nothing should happen since the TLD root servers are independent of a particular registrar. If you're hosting your DNS at a third party then the registrar has nothing to do with DNS queries for your domain. If for some reason you need to CHANGE your name servers while your registrar is down then you're going to have problems...

I can one thing, if it wasn't for Bari, nothing would get done or at least this is my feeling. I have always contacted her with issues and she promptly gets the job accomplished, kind of like MIchaelO with epass...same scenario.
