How fast was your modem?

I started out on a brand spanking new 1200baud. I loved that puppy!

I used some software from some google code spot to make this so you can reminisce.

This is today's blog on yesterday's technology:

Before you load the first one. Read this: I want you to WAIT until the toplist loads before you go to the next one. It will take a bit to load. But it will be a nice benchmark for the later links. Also, keep in mind. This is just the text. This isn't going to load the pictures. Only the HTML.

1200baud:
http://18yearsold.co.in/slow_as_shit...useofjuggs.com

Then my I got my pops hooked on Prodigy and he sprung for a 9600baud:
http://18yearsold.co.in/slow_as_shit...useofjuggs.com
What a great dad!

Next the 28.8K next Xmas... sweet! You can almost hear the telephone line sizzling.
http://18yearsold.co.in/slow_as_shit...useofjuggs.com

The good ole' 56K
http://18yearsold.co.in/slow_as_shit...useofjuggs.com
Remember, you still have surfers using these... though they probably don't have credit cards or checking accounts. But that is what phone pay is for right?

And finally DSL at 768K
http://18yearsold.co.in/slow_as_shit...useofjuggs.com

I miss that slow modem. We used to have to think... Now we can just splog shit and throw up pussy pics and not give a shit about nothin'....

Also keep in mind, 56K modems only ran at 8000baud. The rest of the speed is compression. That is how little bandwidth your copper phone line could provide.

But oh yeah modems.. beep beeeep beeep beeep schwinnng waaaaaahhhhhh

ok I think I am on. Yes I am on. Enjoy that speedy web experience.

Acer 70 Mhz processor and a whopping 500M HD. Let me at that XPics. hehe I'm armed and ready as an Acer wm. lol

Actually now I'm thinking the Acer had built in 2400 (rings a bell) and I think I went and bought the exterior modem and went up to 14.4 then bought a diff modem and went to 28.8. Had opf course good old windows 3.1 I believe.

It's like saying there is the gold now go get it with this slow ass computer. Of course you only needed a few pics on a site and cha ching but back then you had to buy the pics for like $80 for one dvd of a few pics and it took forever to upload and dl. Memories.

My first line was a 56k moving up to 2mb, then 10, now im on 20.

I wondered about 50mb. Its great to have the best, however, I dont think I would notice any difference.

My first modem ever was 1200 baud. Then eventually I got a 56K modem. Where I lived the phone lines were so old and shitty it never ran at more than about half its potential. I was in this business almost a full year before cable internet was available where I lived. Once I got it I wondered how I ever got anything done before.

RS-232C serial port and the telephone interface II was my modem. Which was "up to 300 Baud" lol

I originally had this cassette bugger and no floppy drives.

What is the real difference between 30mb and 15mb? If you are not a file sharer?

When I went from shotgunning two modems to my first DSL at 384K or some shit it was like.. Hmm.. Free vs. paying $50 for twice the speed.. Hmm... Why did I sign that 1 year contract?

1984, 300bps accoustic coupled modem connected to a printer terminal... no green screen, it just printed out everything that came down the line.

Sometimes it feels like I'm on the 2009 equivalent of 300bps, my DSL syncs cleanly at 8Mbps but the bandwidth is artificially limited to 3Mbps due to congestion. And some of you guys have 100Mbit links to your home desktop...

I actually preferred DOS until windows 98.

I started with a 1200 I borrowed from a friend. Then I got a 2400 baud from another friend.

Purchased a shitty 9600 that when I was running a BBS I had to write my on connection routines as the ones that came with Hermes II didn't cover it properly.

The big day came when I finally upgraded to a hayes 14.4 modem. From there I always got hayes. Upgraded a bunch more and eventually had multiple phones lines for my BBS.

Ran bulletin boards WWIV, Renegade, and Hermes II. Fun stuff. Guy I went to school with was Lord Jazz from ACiD so all my lovely ansi menu systems were done by him. lol

Was so stoked back then with shell accounts, fido net... too funny.

0 day ftw!

First gateway we owned had a 14.4 modem and my dad upgraded it to a 28.8 shortly after... i remember him telling a friend about it

when i was in college, i remember trying to setup a network on a 56k modem so two of us could use the internet at the same time
